2000 mercury cougar hesitating/jerking

When i push the gas pedal mostly on tge freeway it seems like its not getting any gas...you can put the pedal all the way to the floor, then when it does get the gas it jerks the car. It does it more it seems like when the RPM's are around 2000 and I go to accelerate (does not really make a difference what speed I am going). If it does it really bad the check engine light will flash on and off for a minute and then stop flashing and stay on. I have changed O2 sensors, coil pack and fuel filter. When they put in on the tester at Autozone it says something about "bank 1 lean" (can't remember the exact code). Any ideas?!

I had the same kind of problem and I ended up solving it by actually checking for recalls for the 2000 Cougar and when you do, you'll see that there is a fuel pump recall. I dont' know if you've already done this but I figured i'd post this and try and help out!

Much luck

Check into the Transmission Range Circuit / Controller, it's a sensor that cost around $50, apparently it's also another common problem w/ the cougars that causes something like what you described

First, disconnect neg battery cable 10 minutes and reattach to clear codes.
Lean condition means it is not getting same fuel as other side of engine.
Since you had it scanned before, try Autozone to see if new results.
You might try a TPS switch which regulates spark and fuel feed. At lower speeds EGR starts to open-you should have code for a problem there.

In my 2002 mercury cougar i just put gas in it and now when i start it i have to be pushing gas at all time or it cuts off

Probably a bad tank of gas. Go to your local parts store and buy a bottle or two of Heet. It's in a yellow bottle. Then drive to the nearest Chevron or Shell gas station and top off the tank after dumping the Heet in. If the problem persists then change out your fuel filter.

Jerking and hesitation between 35mph and 65mph

Time to go get it diagnosed. Could be a tunup issue or cranks sensor or fuel pump. You most likely have a code stored to help diagnosing

Jerking & powerloss during acceleration

Unfortunatley, there are many problems with this model. "google" Cougar and youwill find many unhappy people. Open windows will get the inside of the car wet, but will not affect the gas. It sounds like a bad tranny, but try some drygas first.
