88 Prelude 88 Honda Prelude 2.0 Si Automatic. After the car warms up, The S3 light blinks constantly, then the check engine light came on. The car boggs down then accelerates and decelerates about 300 rpms at hwy speed. When taking off it struggles with the peddle to the floor. Acts like the transmission is having trouble shifting. The next day, it kept dying out even at highway speeds. Had to put in nuetral when stopping to prevent it from dieing. I found the following codes from the ECU: Code 1 Oxygen content A, Code 2 Oxygen content B, Code 8 TDC position sensor, & Code 17 Vehicle speed sensor. Could a transmission problem cause these codes? Any ideas?

    What is the TCM?

  • Anonymous Aug 10, 2009

took to the dealer, said the distributer is bad, and may be causing the other issues. The TCM did not show a code for the S3 issue. Bought a used distributer and am looking for a VSS as I am told they are no longer manufactured for 3rd generation preludes due to issues when decelerating.

You need to check the tcm for codes too. The s3 light is like the check engine light for the tcm. The VSS code might be your problem.

if your d4 light started flashing, then that means a transmission sensor is failing, which causes your transmission to act funny.ill get back to you with a method on checking them and a list of codes to get you started, but dont go and ask for a new transmission. it might not be necessary.

S3 light starts blinking after driving around for a little while. I also notice the speedometer will stop working and then starts back working. When I turn off the ignition this clear the blinking S3...

The transmission's electronic control module is most likely bad I had a 1989 prelude that had the same issue I had to replace the TCM on it after the S3 light came on but my problem was a problem shifting, if you have a electronic speed sensor for the trans. and not a speedometer cable the speed sensor may be bad if you have the cable type change the TCM (transmission control module)

Transmision light on dash flashing

I have a similar problem with the S3 light flashing and the check engine light coming on as well as surging issues. On '88-'91 Preludes the ECU is located under the carpet on the right passenger floorboard. There will be a small flap in the carpet you pull up to see the ECU LED. Turn the key to ACC(radio on, but not started) and follow the directions on the link below. http://mustardcat.brinkster.net/p3g/Documentation/ECUerrorcodes/ECUcodes.htm

Rough idle(200-300RPM)off idle runs great no white smoke

Have you changed your fast idle valve or air idel control valve I would change the air idle valve because it is the one with an electric sensor.
