Is your ABS light on? If there is a problem with your ABS the transmission will not shift above 2nd gear. I had a similar problem, it had to do with a faulty connection on the transfer case.
Providing your transmission fluid level is where it is supposed to be, your problem could be the shift solenoid, or sometimes if you change the tranny oil and filter a lot of problems will be corrected.

Hello. It seems your vehicle's transmission has to be rebuilt/replaced. Any automatic transmission that won't 'shift' from 1st gear into 2nd or 3rd gear has a 'worn' slave cylinder that 'slides' gears one way or another. 1st gear works yet 2nd and 3rd don't. Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.
If it won't shift to 3rd and stays in second, bad shift solenoid/s. If it shifts and the transmission drops out(high RPM's), the bad clutches in the transmission. Rebuild. Solenoids around $600 to replace. Transmission rebuild around $2200.

The gear may be stripped, can't catch other gear,have you been grinding this gear,will have to go into transmission and replace third gear,will have to wind second gear out and shift to 4th gear.May be better and cheaper to get a remanufactured transmission cause all parts are new versus just 3rd gear being replaced.
Your transmission has 3 shift rails... 1st - 2nd 3rd -4th 5th- Reverse
If your 3rd gear doesn't work , you have an internal transmission problem, such as a syncronizer, or similar fail... There is not much you can fix, without removeing the transmission.
