My Nissan Frontier won't shift and when it does it easily slides over to the next one or get's stuck on one gear. Any idea's of what the problem might be?

The shifter cable connects the interior gear selector to the transmission. This allows the driver to select the correct gear.

Sept 10, 2019 - Nothing is worse than sitting in a vehicle that's stuck in park. The engine is running fine, but the shifter just won't move.

Hi. Have you inspected anything so far? I'm not sure what year your Frontier is or how many miles are on it. You will need to dig in and narrow down the possibilities. Please inspect the shifter for loose linkage. Check the shift cable for worn or missing bushings at the ends (at the eyelets). Also inspect the post that the eyelet slides onto. Look there for any defects. Please let me know what you find. Good Luck.

The shifter lever must be in either neutral or drive. The Frontier has an unlock mechanism to shift the lever if is locked.

you need a new slave cylinder your clutch

Shift cable broken or binding.
Have a trusted person try to shift it while you look at the linkage on the side of the transmission.
make sure engine is off, key on, parking brake set and all wheels are blocked in front and back (so you don't get run over)
Look for the small movement at the shifter linkage while the helper is trying to shift.
Many times, it's a small clip or mounting (cable to shift linkage) that has broken, gone missing, or twisted up.
Only do this on a flat surface with vehicle blocked in place.
Transmission shop is your next best bet if you do not feel comfortable.

Usually a problem with the brake switch or the electric solenoid that locks the shifter into park. That circuit would need to be tested.

Usually I find one of three problems that cause a manual transmission to be stuck in a single gear. If the gear oil level is low then the shift forks and rails can get dry and bind enough that the rail sticks and won't move. The same low fluid problem can cause the sliding gear to become stuck hard enough on the splined shaft it slides on that it won't move or the shift interlock parts between the shift rails [which prevent two gears from being engaged at once] can break or bind which will also prevent the shift lever from moving. The shift lever and tower [the part the lever is fastened to on top of the transmission] may have to be removed to see if the problem can be fixed from the top or if the problem is internal and the transmission has to be taken apart and repaired. There are other problems that cans cause this such as bad internal bearings, broken or worn shift forks but they are fairly rare if the oil level is maintained and changed occasionally.

the throttle body butterfly is letting too much air through so its probably stuck or dirty, they should be cleaned every service but noone ever does, if its revving beteen gears then its prob getting stuck in different places so it could probably just use a good clean out

My VW is not shifting into reverse at all; I think a certain person was driving and mistakenly pressed the gear shifter down for all gears--reverse is the only gear you press the shifter down first in. Doesn't grind, 1 2 3 and 4 work but no reverse no reverse lights.
I've read several complicated (can't see scenario's) posts on screens and linkage and a cable fixed one guys problem but still no solutions.
