When getting the trailer tow package on a grand caravan sxt, does it come with the 4 prong or the 7 prong?

I am just annoyed because I said I needed what I had on my 2012 van and when I got my 2017 it was the 4 pin. I said that it was not the same and was told ‘this is how it’s done now’. Which it is not. We recently bought a camping trailer and can’t even tow it because I need the 7 pin.

I sympathise; the regulations around the construction and use of trailers grow almost annually and have become very complex. Ordinary people depend on the guidance of experts and should not be fobbed off by a salesperson who should be expert but clearly is not.

With the best will in the world the essential lighting cannot be driven via a 4-pin setup if a hard wired ground is needed (best). These days for added safety the tail lights have separate circuits making a 7-pin setup necessary.
Below is a link to a typical 7-pin setup...

It was 4-pin standard. For 2019 I don't believe that a tow package offered any longer.

Depends where you are, the type of trailer and where and when it was built - over here 7 pin has been standard for basic lighting for many decades with another 7 pin supplementary for caravan functions.
For a few years Europe has used a single 13 pin.

SOURCE: I want to know how

Hi,

The towing capacity of 2006 dodge grand caravan is around 2000lbs unless you have the optional towing group which allows you a towing weight oh up to 3800lbs.

You can increase the towing capacity, but it wouldn't be worth it...stiffening up the rear suspension to carry a slightly higher tongue weight (which will then result in axle failure) and then increasing the cooling capacity of the transmission.
You would also have to increase the horsepower of the engine as it can't pull that effectively.

The best way to increase the towing capacity? Replace the vehicle...you are just going to be a hazard on the road and risk yours and others lives :-( Sorry, not the answer you wanted.

Good Luck!!

Thanks!!

SOURCE: My trailer that has electric brakes installed and a 7 prong plug connector. My Tundra has a tow package with a 7 prong plug.

One of the vehicles would also need to be fitted with a electric brake controller. If the Tundra already has one fitted then the answer would have a 99% chance of yes.

Where to find the wire going to the trailer towing plug for the braking.

As far as I know, your trailer towing package does not include a circuit for trailer braking. These packages normally only supply taillights, brake-lights, and turn signals.
RV sales and service dealerships should be able to help you.
God bless your efforts.

Can I tow a horse trailer using Class IV hitches?

Towing must be taken seriously and you must therefore make sure the correct towing accessories. A class 4 hitch cannot handle the massive weight of a horse trailer, it is therefore better if you didnt use it but used a class 5 hitch which can handle the loads.

Trailer wiring problem. Tow vehicle is a 2008 Grand Caravan with 4 wire plug. Double checked, plug function works fine. When trailer is plugged to tow vehicle with tow vehicle lights OFF the trailer...

Most likely the brown wire from the trailer connector is connected to a constant battery voltage source, and it should be connected to the vehicle running light circuit, however someone might have wired the trailer connector up that way on purpose so that the trailer does not draw power from the vehicle running lights and possibly damage the vehicle running light circuit. (Dodge/Chrysler vehicles do have delicate lighting systems) Here are some images to help assist you, and the 4 way connector is the same as the 5 way connector just without the blue wire for the trailer brakes.

Electrical towing wiring problem on Grand Caravan 2006

Well the BEST way to fix that is take the Van AND Trailer to the dealer and make them check it over and get it working. Sounds like they screwed up., and are trying to blame the trailer. The 4 pins are easy to check Running lights, Left turn, Right turn and Ground. I suspect the 7 pin is wired wrong. I dont know why they put a 7 pin wiring plug on? Those are used for largeer trailers that need a battery feed and electric brakes

Towing capacity

While a Grand Prix isn't really designed to tow,the capacity of the car would be 4 adults and luggage. In my estimation, that would equate to roughly 1000 pounds that the car can comfortably haul around. Now,you do have to realize that this is going to be ******* the transmission especially, and the engine secondly.Definitely install an auxiliary transmission cooler to help dissipate the heat from the trans fluid.A close look at the rear suspension and possibly any upgrades there will help out with the tongue weight that a trailer creates.Check and see how much the trailer actually weighs before proceeding.Unlike cars of 30 years ago, that were outfitted with V8,rear wheel drive, truck engines and transmissions, today's cars really aren't the ideal choice to tow with,as a front wheel drive transaxle is pretty light duty.Towing a lawnmower and small trailer,or a jet ski,no problem.A camper trailer would need to be really light, and the other issue might be brakes.Check your brakes really well on your car,as they will also be stopping the weight of whatever you're towing.Good luck.
