SOURCE: Subaru forester PO 171 code

Your fuel system is too lean. It's typically the primary O2 sensor (on the pipe between the engine and the catalytic converter). The mass airflow sensor is also possible but the O2 sensor is a wear item requiring periodic replacement and is more likely.

SOURCE: AWD went out in my 1998 Subaru Forester?

This recently happened to my 98 Subaru Legacy Outback.
My problem is in the rear differential. May be the same for you.
When making a turn, the car sounds like a Star Wars T.I.E. Fighter. The outside wheel is not turning fast enough to keep up with the inside wheel or vice versa. AWD is disengaged and car is currently operating on Front WD. I was told this is fine to drive this way.

SOURCE: Subaru Forester 1999 GLS spark plug gap?

do the plugs yerself, on a turbo model they are awkward but worth saving your money. you need to take out the air box to do that side (off side in uk) get your plug socket 16mm, and fit it in to the plug (after you take off the leads!) then depending on length of your socket you may need an extention, i use the short swivel adaptor thingy!.. and slowly undo, ... gap to 0.7 - 0.8 on a turbo, 0.6 if your running high boost on a modded model, .............the other side (near side in uk) you got to take out the battery and the washer bottle, be careful with the pipework under the bottle and connections. .... there is not alot of room to change plugs on a 16valve subaru....so have a swear box and plasters ready lol....DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!!!!!.... BECOMES A PROBLEM TO GET A BROKEN PLUG OUT ON THESE!...
I have just started a new club, www.forestercarclub.co.uk and www.forums.forestercarclub.co.uk ... based in uk, needs members to kick start, ask me any questions too. :) also have a page on google sites https://sites.google.com/site/subaruforesterdriverclub/

I have a 2005 subaru forester, i recently swapped out the motor i and put a new battery and my car wont start but my running lights stay on and the horn wont stop honking what could be the problem?

engine swaps, with battery Neg lug pulled the whole time.?
  • short block? 2.5L?
  • long block?
  • or total engine swap, all wiring , and sensor,,injectors, and all, (ALL)
causes
not connecting all connectors backup
or not moving all sensors over old to new engine,
if the IMMO lamp glows correctly way ask that, the users guide tell this on all cars. dead, stuck on, or blinks. in the manual is how.
BCM brain is not happy for sure, it runs horns and lights. and more.
same engine exactly?
to pull and engine lots of connectors can be missed or crushed.

if all is done right
and fails
pull battery neg lug for 1 hour, and put back see if BCM resets as it well. all brain boxes resets PCM/TCM /BCM and well all do.

did you buy a dead car? and never seen he IMMO work ever you?
open glove box take out users guide and read IMMO page

IMMO page 2-5 glove box words

The security indicator light deters potential thieves by
indicating that the vehicle is equipped with an immobi-
lizer system. It begins flashing about 60 seconds after
the ignition switch is turned from the "ON" position to
the "ACC" or "LOCK" position or immediately after the
key is pulled out.
If the security indicator light does not flash, the immo-
bilizer system may be faulty. If this occurs, contact
your SUBARU dealer as soon as possible.
In case an unauthorized key is used (e.g. an imitation
key), the security indicator light comes on.
NOTE
Even if the security indicator light flashes irregu-
larly or its fuse blows (the light does not flash if its
fuse is blown), the immobilizer system will func-
tion normally

AC not working. Just put 134A refrigerant into it, but still not working. Notice the recirculation light does not come on when pressed, but the AC light activates

is your compressor engaging ? there is a magnetic pulley on the compressor, if there is gas in the system, when you turn on the ac the magnetic coupling should engage , if not there might be an electrical problem, a burned out fuse

Reprogramming remote start

If it doesn't program, it is probably lived it's life. If it's been in there since 09. When I get cars with after market remotes/security. And they are having problems. The first thing I take out is the remote systems. So for this has fixed every car. Good ones last about 7 years, cheap ones will get you maybe 2 years.

How do you reset the computer on a 1998 subaru forester without the wireless remote?

I am thinking you mean the alarm system. If so, Just locate the box under dash by where your left knee sits. It is about 4" x4" x 1". It has a wire lead that has a small button on it. Just push and hold the button for about 15 secounds and it will reset itself. That should stop the marker lights from flashing. Good luck and hope this helps. Have a great day.

Security light

Your battery is probably low. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Put the key in the ignition. Turn it to the on position. Then reconnect the negative battery cable. That should clear the security lights.
