You can't, you need a specialist Gas Recovery unit as the gas has to be recycled and can't be let into the atmosphere. Just buy one of these.

How a Central Air Conditioning System Works
amn_howac.jpg

Facts:
  • The typical central air conditioning system is a split system, with an outdoor air conditioning, or "compressor bearing unit" and an indoor coil, which is usually installed on top of the furnace in the home.
  • Using electricity as its power source, the compressor pumps refrigerant through the system to gather heat and moisture from indoors and remove it from the home.
  • Heat and moisture are removed from the home when warm air from inside the home is blown over the cooled indoor coil. The heat in the air transfers to the coil, thereby "cooling" the air.
  • The heat that has transferred to the coil is then "pumped" to the exterior of the home, while the cooled air is pumped back inside, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
  • Central air conditioning can also be provided through a package unit or a heat pump.

Benefits:
  • Indoor comfort during warm weather - Central air conditioning helps keep your home cool and reduces humidity levels.
  • Cleaner air - As your central air conditioning system draws air out of various rooms in the house through return air ducts, the air is pulled through an air filter, which removes airborne particles such as dust and lint. Sophisticated filters may remove microscopic pollutants, as well. The filtered air is then routed to air supply ductwork that carries it back to rooms.
  • Quieter operation - Because the compressor bearing unit is located outside the home, the indoor noise level from its operation is much lower than that of a free-standing air conditioning unit.

The controls for the heating/air conditioning do not work correctly, what could be wrong

Those controls are without a doubt vacuum actuated and the vacuum block out of position. Maybe not getting vacuum from the engine. Check to see is the vacuum manifold block is pushed all the way onto the connection and tabs lock in. Check the vacuum line to the black vacuum ball on the firewall under hood is getting vacuum.

Bleed air out of air conditioning system

There will be no air in an ac system unless you have opened a line and let the gas out. To get the air out you will need a vacuum pump and pump it down to max vacuum for around 4 hours to allow any moisture in the system to boil off and be removed by the pump. If you do not have this equipment then best get an ac mechanic to do the job because if you do not do it right then you will be in for a lot of ac problems.

Pro Standard Fan mount

Since the failure of an air conditioner to turn on, loss of air conditioner cooling capacity, reduced air conditioning output temperatures, loss of cool air supply, or even loss of air flow entirely can be due to a variety of problems with one or more components of an air conditioner or air conditioning system, after reviewing the lost air conditioner cooling diagnosis procedures described in this article, be sure to also review the diagnostic procedures at each of the individual air conditioning diagnosis and repair major topics listed just below. To return to our air conditioning and refrigeration home page go to AIR CONDITIONING & HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS.

Electrical problems on HVAC systems: Keep in mind that despite the depth of technical detail you will find here about all components of air conditioners and heat pumps, most service calls for non-working air conditioners or heat pumps turn up an electrical problem. So if your A/C system is just not working at all be sure to check all of our electrical and control setting suggestions first.

Mechanical problems on HVAC systems: tend to fall into these groups: refrigerant leaks, dirty condenser coil or unit, dirty evaporator or cooling coil, or burned out (or hard-starting) compressor motors. We have also seen a number of problems with fans and fan motors in both the compressor/condenser unit and in the air handler/blower fan unit. Some of those fan problems are mechanical - like a loose fan belt or blade. MORE DETAILS

Air Conditioning only works during winter and heat only works during summer!

Miss Kristin, your situation sounds more like the air flow blend doors/flaps under dash are operating, but incorrectly. All these vehicles temperature changes are actuated by vacuum from the running engine. In your case it's possible a vacuum line has become disconnected from the blend switch behind the lever or the 2 heat and a/c hoses have become switched. Either way, I believe it must be in the vacuum lines under dash, or possibly no vacuum at all to the blend switch because the main hose from the engine has become disconnected or is broken. Best of luck on this luv.
