Either you installed the wrong temperature sensor or the new one is bad or bad wiring.

SOURCE: 2003 vw passat fan runs a long time after engine is off

its not normal.its a coolant temp sensor which has malfunctioned causing the ecu to think the engine is hot even when its not.hence the fan on for so long after ignition switched off.the sensor needs to be changed and put on a diagnostic machine afterwards.just bring it to a garage.

SOURCE: 2001 passat fuse box diagram

It would be easier if you mention what device you're working with and I can tell you what number location it's fuse is at. Symbols are only there to confuse the hell out of you, although it's true purpose is to be recognized as a global standard. Now if you want to make it easier for yourself, buying a Bentley's repair manual is the only way to go. I hate to tell you that there are no free manuals you can down load, it cost money and someones time to upload a manual just to share it freely on the net.

Sounds like temp sensor that controls fan is faulty. This would cause fan to stay on all the time or not turn on at all.

I have a VW Passat. A new thermostat was fitted along with a water pump. The fan now runs constantly. Garage thinks all the sensors although colour coded are identical. Any suggestions

If it runs constantly from cold startup... its electrical... see an auto electrician. If it starts up and runs constantly after it heats up then it can be a faulty thermostat (even new can be faulty) Tip (Put it in boiling water before installed and see if it opens) Also some non genuine water pumps will not cool the car properly.

Hi I own a 2003 Cadillac CTS I am getting a check engine light error light with code P0128 and my heat is fluxuating up and down I have already installed a themostat. What are my options

A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

1-Low engine coolant level
2-Leaking or stuck open thermostat
3-Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
4-Faulty coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
5-Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor

Check coolant level
Check to make sure thermostat is functioning properly Check the Cooling fan Check the ECT sensor Check the IAT sensor If all else fails replace the thermostat

I own an 1999 VW passat. I noticed that the passenger fan is not working? where do i locate the fan temperature sensor? Can I test the fan to make sure it's working?

I believe the other fan comes on when the A/C is running. I would run the engine and turn on the A/C and see if both fans work. You can check the plug going into the fan to check for power with a test light.

Passat code p02181

How old is the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS)? The CTS have been know to fail, don't rule it out. After that, there's the thermostat and possible water pump. The pump would be your last choice since you did not say it was over heating and the effort required to replacing it. Go with the sensor first, it is a 2 part sensor, and apparently the half sending signal to ECU isn't working correctly according to the ECU.

Replaced the sensor ($43 from my local VW dealer: ouch.) Once you the parts in hand, and the engine was cool enough, it takes all of two minutes (less time than it takes you to replace one of the windshield wiper's rubber; who designed that damn thing????). Then replace the Thermostat 190F and cleared the check engine light.

Good luck and this should solve your P2181 Issues.

2003 VW Passat "Oil Press, Turn Off Engine" and "STOP" Light

I would check the oil pressure sensor and the oil pump itself. You can take the sensor out and use a mechanical gauge to check the oil pressure. If the oil pressure is within specs, you need a new sensor, if not, you need a new pump.
