Intermittent ESP/ASR errors at start-up or during a drive. Citroen C3, 2010. Sparkplug thread/grooves are soiled by a sticky oily substance; what could be causing this and are these related?

I've had this issue before and it was resolved for some months, by replacing the sparkplugs, but the oily sparkplug threads is a new development or at least a lot more pronounced now. I have been using an OBD reader to cope with the intermittent ESP fault, but the issue is too persistent now and the unreliability of the car is too great.

Sounds like you have a leaking valve cover gasket which will need to be replaced. The gasket will continue to break down and leak more if not fixed.

Usually repaired by replacing brake pedal switch.
Sticky fluid usually means plugs not properly torqued allowing oil to escape from around thread.

SOURCE: sparkplug wiring for 1995 chevy suburban

Your engine rotates counterclockwise. In that case you install your wires counter clockwise on the distributor. The number 1 connector on the distributor cap is marked 1. You connect the number 1 wire which is the one in the left side. Then go counterclockwise connecting them in this order.

SOURCE: When I removed #4 sparkplug there is oil on

If oil is on the spark plug tip then it could be from worn valve stems or from worn piston rings. When you accelerate away from the traffic lights and the engine blows a lot of greyish smoke then this is a sign of worn parts.
If the oil is leaking into the spark plug hole, then it could be leaking from the tappet cover, either the tappet cover bolts are loose or the tappet cover gasket is faulty.

Hi, have a citroen Ds3 dsport...anti pollution fault, asr/esp, limp mode...need to get out of limp mode to accelerate to clear system... Need help as it's driving me nuts!!!!

the limp mode will not allow you to accelerate until you have fixed the problem and reset the ECM
Limp modes are not there to help ease you frustrations but to prevent costly repairs to the engine and transmission
fix it , reset it then you will have no need to go nuts

Loss of power

Pull up the diagnostic error codes with the help of diagnostic computer and repair as necessary.
Both the ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) and ESP are concerned with the brake system. ESP is the latest one which includes in it ASR, BAS, ABS and ETS in a single control module. It uses steering angle sensor, Yaw rate sensor, acceleration sensor and all wheel sensors to decide which wheel to brake.
In short, delete the error codes and calibrate the sensors.

ASR - Acceleration Skid Control system.
When ASR warning light blinking the system is activated itself for car acceleration skid control.

For today's typical high-torque engines, traction control (ASR) can increase both comfort and safety, particularly when driving on slippery roads or surfaces offering differing levels of grip. Traction control permits smooth starting and acceleration through the full speed range without wheel-spin or fishtailing.

tdisline_338.jpg

ASR only operates in conjunction with the electronic accelerator (E-gas) and uses components of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). If one wheel suddenly begins to rotate faster than the others (slip), ASR intervenes in the engine management system and reduces power until the wheel stops spinning.
The ASR system represents a further contribution to active safety as it maintains vehicle traction and directional stability throughout the acceleration phase at any speed. In addition, it reduces tyre wear. Activation of the ASR system is indicated by a flashing indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.
The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. If the ESP lights on the dashboard permanently the ESP system is faulty. You must access the ESP Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory for pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ESP ECU, in other words reset the ESP system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.
