Can the timing chain tensioner be removed and inspected and then put back or does it have to be replaced once it is removed?

If the tensioner is in good shape there is no reason it can not be re-installed and reused. You might check with your local parts store on the belt. I know some belts are not recommended to be reused once tension has been released.

2002 chevy malibu engine 3.4 interference motor or not?

The 2002 Chevrolet Malibu has the 3.1mfi engine which is not an interference engine. It has a timing chain and not a belt. It is an o.v.h. system with two valves per cylinder. I have replaced timing chains and have had the heads checked, with no damage to the valves.

Does the 2007 Malibu have a timing chain or belt? Also, what is the recommended service interval for changing plugs, 100,000 Miles? Getting ready to take a cross country trip in my friends car and he has...

Your vehicle is equipped with a timing chain. There is no periodic maintenance schedule fr the timing chain.
If your spark plugs have never been changed, now might be a perfect opportunity to change them. Ensure that you properly gap the plugs before installation. You will find gap specs on the engine information tag/sticker under the hood.

1999 chevy malibu

That engine does not have a timing belt, it has a timing chain and therefore much easier to work with as it can only go on a certain way, the primary focus being getting the dots on the timing chain sprockets lined up properly.

I believe, with the engine at Top Dead Center on cylinder #1, the dots will be facing each other. That is to say, the do on the cam sprocket will be facing the dot on the crank sprocket.
