2006 Lexus is220d SE cough and splutter before stalling when at idle?

My 2006 Lexus IS220d SE has recently started to cough and splutter before stalling when at idle. its usually after a couple of mins of the car being in idle. the revs jump from idle to around 1500 rpm a few times before it stalls. once this happens it struggles to start up again, have to lock and unlock the car and after that it starts normally. no error codes or lights are showed?

Hi Anonymous, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Sounds like the fuel pump is shutting off because the car is not recognizing your key in the ignition. What kind of key do you have? Is it factory? Does it have a battery?

  • Anonymous May 14, 2019

The car is with keyless-go. I have 2 factory keys, I tried out both of them and the problem stays. The battery is new.

SOURCE: car idles low, stalls after start

Common issue at the shop (i'm a ford technician), here is what I do to correct it.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

I have a Mazda RX8 a 2006 model is really difficult to start without aerostart and it's running like the timing is out. People sometimes idle but when revved will cough and splutter.changed plugsleads

use the scan tool to determine the fault
low fuel pressure sounds like a candidate for the problem followed by crank position sensor but the scan of the faults will get closer to the rpoblem

What would cause my 2002 hyundai santa fe v6 to take off slow

If it seems to lack power on takeoff, but does not idle rough, cough or splutter, or stall, I'd suspect your low gear shift solenoid has failed in the tranny. This causes the trans to be unable to find low gear. Get a readout of trouble codes as there should be one to assist in finding the cause.

Hello. The DPF is a Catalytic Converter for diesel engines. Traditional Catalytic Convertors are used in Gas Engines. The dealer gave you a "Dealer Specific" engine code. If you used a regular code reader you would see code P2002, which means. Error Code P2002 is defined as Diesel Particulate Filter Efficiency below Threshold Bank 1, which refers to an issue in the efficiency of the particulate filter in the exhaust, which is most likely caused by faulty filter or sensor, or exhaust leak.
The garage is trying to provide you with a quick estimate. The Dealer follows test procedures that Toyota makes available to their technicians. There is a lot going on here and there may be more to come. Depending on mileage, on-time maintenance, condition of fuel system (fuel pressure or injector failure) and engine (blow-by and compression). Your Particulate filter may be fine (electrical component failure), may have wore out or was plugged up due to an engine issue (Fuel injector/s or oil consumption). I hope this helps. Please write back if you have more questions.

Volvo S60 2.4 se T eratic idle and has cut out. Always restarts

Had the same problem where the idle would go to about 500rpm and 'cough', i.e. move up and down and not be stable. Got so bad that when I was in traffic recently the car stalled every time I came to a stop. Turns out I have a bad oxygen sensor as well as MAP sensor. Expensive parts (about $200 each) though not hard to replace. May want to check those first. MAP sensor I believe controls something with gas combining with oxygen in the engine (too much gas, not enough oxygen to combust). I would press the gas peddle and not get much response. I was flooding the engine because that sensor was bad and that's why it was stalling. All stuff I learned after my very uncomfortable experience recently. I have a 2003 S60.
