The positive or hot return wire for the brake light switch is now grounding out,brake light switch is now faulty or a short in the wiring is present bring the car to an auto electrician for diagnosis

Check your emergency brake. Make sure it isn't partially pressed in. Try unplugging the switch to the emergency brake and see if the light goes out; if it does the switch is bad.

1989 Ford F-150 short bed, 6 cyl.-Tried to start and it was completely dead. Battery is only couple years old. I checked to see if lights or inside lights were left on and they were not. Hooked up battery...

Check your ground wire from the battery to the starter...there was a hold down clip theat had rubbed thru the wire coating...left side of the engine. My truck would die...hit the wire and the hood light would come on but wouldn't start even though I knew the battery was charged. Replaced the negative battery cable and all is well, atleast with that issue.LOL

Try pulling your brake pedal up and see if that causes the brake lights to turn off. The problem is most likely a bad brake switch that fits up under your dash and is attached to your pedal, it may not be releasing right and causing your lights to stay on. Hope this helps.
