Generally when a diesel has trouble starting there is always a possibility low compressions are the cause if heater plugs weren't the problem. Some engines are more prone to this than others, the worst and least offender in my experience were both Ford.

Usually if the heater/pre heat is a problem and everything else is ok then removing the air cleaner and blowing hot air directly into the intake will provide a normally starting engine.

Many engine "specialists" will say injector condition plays little or no part in the starting stakes - not true! Apart from any other considerations, something must be done about a non-starter and it is quicker, easier and cheaper to check the easy possibilities before sending the engine for overhaul. A good battery and starter is essential to provide the best possible cranking speed and then ensure the injectors are in good order and that means removing them and sending them to the diesel specialist...

Replace the glowplug relay. Its faulty. The glow plugs stay on until engine warms up.The engine temp switch then activates the relay to switch off.So it could be the temp switch also faulty.

SOURCE: changing glow plugs in a 1997 1.8 ford escort diesel van

Hi Patrick.

I would check that you are getting a live feed to your glow plugs terminals first, on cold starting, with a 12v test light.

Expensive to renew them, and then find it was the fuse or relay !

Best of luck !
John.

Ford 2008 F-350 remote starts great in warm weather will not start in cold. all lights glow plugs ect working just wont start truck and only if 35 degrees and below.

Since batteries lose almost half their cranking power at freezing, and since diesels require much higher fuel temps to start than gasoline engines, many recommend using a block heater whenever the temperature is under 35-40 degrees if starting becomes a problem.

Had 04 transit connect for 6 weeks. always started fine till week ago when turned cold. glow plug light only shows for about 1 second, replaced glow plugs but still the same. can only start every morning...

Sounds like the timer is bad. Since you have power when warm, the power relay must be giving the timer juice. The way it is suppose to work is you wait until the glow plug light goes out and then try to start. In cold weather it should take longer for the glow plug light to go out.

I have a 2006 ford F350 that is hard to start in the morning (cold weather) and blows black smoke when it finally starts. The batteries are less than a year old.

Not knowing your experience with diesel motors,if the glow plugs are not being allowed to cycle it makes starting the motor cold much harder. If it has a block heater package that also helps to plug in. Keeps the coolant warm and in turn keeps the motor warm.

This engine 'loves' glow plugs! One goes and the others try to handle the amps. Change them and you will have no probs! Other than that, I feel this is about the best diesel truck made!

1992 F-350 Dsl - very hard to start when cool

are you using cold temperature engine oil!
if not, try changing oil for cold temperature!

hard starting happens due to the cold temperature, air pressure is low during this season so compression inside the engine is low resulting to hard starting!

make sure that all your glow plugs are working.
