SOURCE: Automatic gearbox

How to prevent the transmission from damage
(The filter usually is screen type and can be cleaned when remove bottom cover. but this is not to be done at regular maintenance inspection.)
- Regularly check your parking space for leaks. Doesn't matter, is it the engine oil leak, power steering fluid or transmission fluid; if you discover any, get it fixed before it caused something serious.
- Once in a while check the transmission fluid level and condition. Not all cars however have the automatic transmission dipstick, in some cars, for example, in late Volkswagen models, the transmission fluid can only be checked by the dealer. Consult with your owner's manual for details. If the transmission fluid level is too low, there is a leak somewhere that needs to be fixed.
- Change the fluid as often as it said in your owner's manual or when it becomes too dark (rather brown than red) or dirty.
Also, keep in mind that an automatic transmission can not be drained completely - there is always some transmission fluid left inside the transmission (the torque converter, in the valve body, etc.) which means you only can change about %60 of the fluid at once. This is one more reason to change it more often.

- Use only the same type of the transmission fluid as specified in the owner's manual or on the dipstick. Some vehicles (e.g Dodge Caravan) are very sensitive to fluid type
- Never shift to the Reverse or Parking until the car comes to a complete stop.
- Never shift from the Parking mode when engine rpm is higher than normal idle.
- Always hold a brakes down when shifting from Parking.
- The automatic transmission can be damaged if towing with the drive wheels on the road. Always use a dolly or place powered wheels on the towing platform (if the vehicle is front wheel drive - tow it from the front leaving rear wheels on the road.

Automatic transmission problems

it sounds like the gearbox is very low on fluid. maybe the drain bung has come out of the torque converter. you will need the car on stands, and remove the cover under the engine and gearbox with 4 screws. it will be dirty and hard to get to but you need to turn the engine over by hand with a socket on the front of the engine (battery disconnected) until you see a bung on the torque converter which is underneath between the engine and gearbox. there is a small cutaway in the bell housing so that you can see it. there should be a small bolt with an internal 5mm allen key head, if it is loose or there is a just a hole you may have your problem. i am fairly sure a merc of thois age will have the bung. also check the gearbox bung as well. if you get someone to pour fluid in while you are under neath you may be able to see where it comes out. some fluid will come out if you overfill the gearbox without running it, i.e. with a complete fill of fluid you need to start the engine to fill the torque converter.

Replaced the injectors do i need to reset the computer

When you remove the injectors necessarily you have to disconnect the battery negative cable for security reasons. This automatically reset your computer. If for some reason you did not disconnected just do it for more than 30 seconds to reset your computer

Transmission goes into hard shift mode. Ford replaced valve on engine plus valve body. did not fix. .seems to happen either going up or down hills or around a lot of curves.. Cannot really tell fluid...

not fluid level thats for sure ??or it wouldnt drop into gear straight away ,seems more like a sensor wire or solonoid wire loose inside the gearbox ?? feeding the wrong information back to the computer ?? but i am not that experianced all that on autos as not many in europe with autos ,,thought if computer for gearbox is under the floor passenger side ,check its not wet with water ,had this similar thing with a big audi once the floor under the mat held the computer and it was full of water ?

Nissan primera, engine management light permanently on. When car is first started gearbox changes without a problem. when the engine gets warm it sticks in 1st or sticks in 3rd and 4th and won't change...

Hi Kev,

Your Nissan Primera has an on-board diagnostic computer which can detect malfunctions in either engine or transmission.

When the Engine Management light remains lit, this means some faults are present and need investigating.

From what you've described, one of the issues is indeed related to the transmission, but you will need to have the trouble codes (DTC's) extracted from your vehicle's computer, in order to determine what requires repair.

Whenever power is disconnected (i.e. the battery) and re-connected, this resets your vehicle's computer momentarily, until such time as it detects the fault again.

Recommend you either have your local dealer extract the codes (for a small 15min labor fee), or learn to extract the codes yourself, using a suitable jumper wire.

How to reset bmw 545i computer when you change battery

Having the battery disconnected for half an hour or so will drain the capacitors in the ECU. Connecting a battery at that point puts the computer into relearn mode automatically.

Looking for a reset switch after you disconnect the battery

There isn't one. By disconnecting the battery for an hour or so, you allow the capacitors in the computer to drain. When you hook the battery back up, it automatically puts the computer into relearning mode, which essentially is a reset of the computer.
