Removal
NOTE: The steps included in the SJB removal and installation procedure are critical to restoring the vehicle security and tire pressure monitoring systems to normal operation. A new SJB is delivered in manufacturing mode with 6 pre-set diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the tire pressure monitoring system. The presence of these DTCs requires the installation procedures be followed in order to clear the DTCs and enable normal SJB operations.
NOTE: Prior to the removal of the SJB, it is necessary to upload the module configuration information to the diagnostic tool. This information must be downloaded to the new SJB after installation. For additional information, refer to Section 418-01 .

  1. Remove the driver door scuff plate. For additional information, refer to Section 501-05 .
  1. Position the LH door opening weather seal aside.
  1. NOTE: While pulling the trim panel rearward, pull the hood release lever rearward in order for the release lever to slide through the trim panel. Remove the pushpin and the cowl side trim panel.
  1. Remove the 2 bolts and the parking brake release handle.
  1. Disconnect the parking brake switch electrical connector.
  1. Release the hood release cable pushpin from the parking brake control bracket.
  1. Release the harness clip from the parking brake cable housing.
  1. NOTE: Rotating the parking brake control counterclockwise allows enough access to clear the instrument panel reinforcement. Remove the 3 bolts and position the parking brake control assembly under the brake pedal.

SOURCE: Fuel Filter for Sport Trac

If the car is running good no engine problems or poor gas mileage I wouldn't worry about it. This is done as preventive maintenance. Every tune-up parts have replacement recommended periods. Ignition components, all filters and lubricants should all be replaced the most every six moths depending on how much you drive. Its all common sense if you check your oil and its black its time to change it. If your brakes are screeching same thing and if it been six month probably well over 15,000 miles since you replaced the fuel filter it'll be a good idea to change it.

SOURCE: mechanic is telling me that the smart junction box

The Smart Junction Box is an additional item in the circuitry that controls power distribution to all of the lighting and a bunch of other ancillary systems on your Freestar. The "Smart" in the name is an oxymoron, it isn't smart at all. It takes input from a switch and then decides what needs to get power, like headlights, with tail, turn and parking lights. This used to be done in the switch assembly, and I guess that Ford decided that was too simple. Find out what is wrong with the SJB, and think about having it replaced, or, do what I am, splicing into a circuit that mimics the behavior of the tag lights. My license lamps are out, even after replacing the harness and bulbs, on a 2004 Freestar, and I feel your pain.

SOURCE: Where is the smart junction box located

Hi there:
According with the manual, the Power Distribution Box is located in the engine compartment. The power distribution box contains high-current fuses that protect your vehicle's main electrical systems from overloads.

Also, the Passenger Compartment Fuse Panel, that is located below and to the left of the steering wheel by the brake pedal. Remove the panel cover to access the fuses.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

2010 Ford XLT Sport trac.

There isn't one and you can't install LED bulbs because the Smart Junction Box doesn't understand the signals coming back from the LED control module on the 5 volt computer network.

Having said that, Ford would like to sell you one. Hopefully our Electronics Tech @Jeff Armer will be along to confirm

When I searched to check, I found this on a forum

Can't find the flasher ......... not one. The SJB (Smart Junction Box, which BTW turns a lot of us into dummies ) controls the flash....and a myriad of other functions. Complicates a lot of modifications since it senses power input/output to control various functions. No, I don't completely understand it's operation......

I have no suggestion. Maybe someone with more knowledge of this system will be able to help you.

All the turn lamps are wired to the SJB. The timed on/off cycle is determined by the SJB and is set to flash approximately 80 times per minute if both the front and rear turn lamps operate correctly. If only an individual turn signal lamp operates, the SJB flashes the remaining turn lamp approximately 160 times per minute for bulb outage indication.

2007 Ford Explorer flasher relay

There is no flasher relay , all done electronically by the smart junction box (computer )
The smart junction box (SJB) monitors the multifunction switch position by sending multiple voltage reference signals to the multifunction switch. When the multifunction switch is in the LH or RH TURN positions, or the hazard lamp switch is engaged, that input signal is routed to ground.
When the SJB receives an input from the multifunction switch indicating a request for a turn signal or hazard lamps, the SJB then supplies voltage to the appropriate turn lamps.

Your best bet would be to take it to a qualified repair shop or dealer .

Didn't get the keyless entry code when purchased. Manual says it may be written on computer. Where is the computer?

The SBJ (Smart Junction Box) is the "fuse box" inside the vehicle that controls that system. the label should be on the back or side of that "fuse" box. If the label is not there, ask real nice and a local Ford dealer may retrieve the code for free? The code is also stored electronically in the module.

I need to add daytime running lamps to an 08 exlorer u.s. version non fleet. any suggestions?

All you have to do is carry it to your dealer and have them install there IDS scan tool and access programmable parameters in the smart junction box and turn on the feature.

Here is a copy of a broadcast message from Ford(sorry for the caps I just copied and pasted) on this:
20328 2006-2008 EXPLORER 4DR/MOUNTAINEER/2007-2008 EXPLORER SPORT TRAC - DAYTIME RUNNING LAMP ACTIVATION/DEACTIVATION
SOME 2006-2008 EXPLORER 4DR/MOUNTAINEER, AND 2007-2008 EXPLORER SPORT TRAC VEHICLES MAY HAVE CUSTOMERS THAT DESIRE TO ACTIVATE OR DEACTIVATE THE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS (DRL). THE FEATURE HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE IDS AND PDS SCAN TOOLS AS A PROGRAMMABLE PARAMETER. THE PROCEDURE IS TO: SELECT MODULE PROGRAMMING FROM TOOLBOX, SELECT PROGRAMMABLE PARAMETERS, EXTERIOR LIGHTS. DRL WILL BE ONE OF THE SELECTIONS WITH ENABLE/DISABLE AS OPTIONS. NOTE: THIS IS NOT A WARRANTABLE REPAIR.
