I have a 1994 mercury cougar xr7 4.6 v8 and it doesnt want to start anymore .i was running low on gas and turned off on my way to gas station. I thought it was just because it ran out of gas but didnt start after i put 6 gallons of gas in it. I was checking spark plugs and took one out and the car starts but when i put the sparkplug back in it doesnt start.

Your car also could be vapor locked..It's caused by overfilling your car with gas..Putting the extra 50 cents after the gas pump stopped..The gas goes down your vapor line and plugs up your filter canister. Then you gas vapors have no where to go. So it builds up pressure in your gas tank. When the pressure becomes greater than your fuel pump the car shuts off until the pressure drops. If this is the cause. You should be able to loosen your gas cap and hear air sucking into the tank....The car will then start....Buy a new canister.. Problem solved

You may have destroyed your fuel pump, but what you wrote about it running with a spark plug out is not making sense unless your exhaust got totally plugged up and the removed spark plug is allowing it to release some pressure and run . Try having someone hold thier hand over the tail pipe while you try to start it, if they don't feel any air trying to come out you have a plugged up exhaust, or a big hole in it, or both, you should feel something even if you have some leaks in the exhaust.

You may have a plugged catalytic converter, best get it to someone who is equipped to diagnose it further

Since the electric fuel pump depends on the gas in the gas tank to cool and lubricate it you have almost certainly destroyed the pump.

If the car has over 100,000 miles on it, you may need to replace the distributer. I don't think the bad gas caused this issue I think it may just be a coincdence. But if you already changed the plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor, I would definetly check the distributor.

SOURCE: car won't start

Your fuel pump is sticking and not pumping, this is common if you run the fuel down to less than 1/4 full, the fuel pump needs the gas to cool itself, below a 1/4 tank the pump is not getting cooled and after repeatably running low on fuel it overheats and fails. Running the car near 1/2 tank extends the pump life to many years more than running tank below a 1/4 full..

I am trying to find out where the fuel filter is on a 1994 Mercury Ford Cougar?

Cougar Repairs Fuel Filter Replacement

Above is a good video but it probably is a wee too recent to hit the spot.

For your 1994 Cougar:

If it is a V8 it is under the car on the passenger side about 1/3 of the way from the engine to the gas tank.

If you need a diagram or service manual, if you register at the following site, you can access a manual:

These will NOT be the manufacturer's workshop manuals but they will suffice for you to spy the fuel filter.

If the cylinder spins freely then you should be able to move it to the accessory or run position and push the lock in to remove the cylinder. I have also had to drill the release pin out of the cylinder.

1994 cougar will turn over but wont start, i put start fkuid and start normal

If it starts when you spray in starter fluid it would sound like a fuel supply problem. Make sure you are getting fuel and have a sufficient supply. Possibly a bad fuel pump or pressure regulator.

In my 2002 mercury cougar i just put gas in it and now when i start it i have to be pushing gas at all time or it cuts off

Probably a bad tank of gas. Go to your local parts store and buy a bottle or two of Heet. It's in a yellow bottle. Then drive to the nearest Chevron or Shell gas station and top off the tank after dumping the Heet in. If the problem persists then change out your fuel filter.

1997 mecury cougar v8 engine. Wont start. It is

Not sure if you got your cougar running or not, but I had a similar problem and it turned out to be my Crank shaft sensor. I replaced it myself, its fairly easy if you are the type that likes to pull stuff apart and fix it. The part cost about $20. you do have to move the ac compressor over but you don't have to remove it makes the job a lot easier. I am still running the 1997 cougar xr7 30th anniversary edition, it has 160000 miles on it and still running strong. I think these are the best cars mercury ever built, i hope they come out with them again in this body style and platform.
