Hello,
I just just just resolved this same issue! My 2010 Kia Forte Koup Ex Standard Transmissions gear shifter was stuck in reverse (which I thought it could also have been first gear but my reverse lights were on). I started and restarted my vehicle and pressed the clutch and break in, pulled the lever on the shifter up to get out of reverse and it wouldn't budge.
I called a mechanic to ask about prices of doing a transmission fluid flush and fill since all forums directed me to that being the issue... He stated he could solve it and then DROVE TO ME (what a man) to help. Upon his arrival he messed with the shifter and peeped under the hood. The end result he did was....
HE HAD MY PARTNER HELP HIM ROCK MY 2010 KIA FORTE KOUP EX BY PUSHING AT THE FRONT WHILE I HELD THE CLUTCH IN AND BBBBBOOOOOMMMMMM!!! My shifter magically popped out of place!!
He recommended still going to get the Transmission Fluid drained flushed and filled since the reason the shifter had gotten stuck is due to LOW LOW trani fluid!!
WHICH, if you have the same model and year vehicle that is standard... the only way to drain and fill the fluid is underneath the vehicle. It's located in the middle under the hood at the bottom which requires the car to be lifted. If you are able to access it, there are two bolts. The larger of the two if I am not mistaken is the full whole that takes a 17mm wrench to remove. Once removed use a small hose to plug the hole and shimmy the hose to above the engine and add fluid into it to fill. I would say a quart just to get you safe and going until you can go to a mechanic!!!
The car takes 75 85 GEAR OIL!! Autozone only had 75 90 which is just thicker so it'll do!
Goodluck! I hope my answer helps anyone out in need. After 24 hours being stranded finally my saving grace was shown after hours of calling, reading and video watching... My resolution was to just ROCK THE F****** CAR????
