It could be neither, If your engine is getting too hot, it can be in the cooling system, like the water pump, radiator, belt and the like, or engine timing may be off, and so forth. You even may have low coolant or a head gasket problem or cracked head, depending on the diagnostics. Just changing the spark plugs by themselves will not make the engine run hot, and while you can have ign module, etc failure when the engine is at normal operating temperatures, they by themselves should not make the engine run hot. The battery in my 2007 Lucerne is under the rear seat. Just pull up hard on the fornt of the rear seat bottom.

You are reffering to manually taking a screwdriver to release the shifter i take it....if so, you are probably not getting in far enough to hit the release.
