Always use new head bolts.
1)tighten to 40ft/lbs
2)back off 1/2 turn
3)tighten back to 40ft/lbs
4)tighten an additional 90 degrees
5)tighten an additional 90 degrees.

I'm assuming you mean for the cylinder head. This tightening sequence starts in the centre, top to to bottom, and then from one side (1 bolt) than to the other side of centre another bolt. Basically you will work in an X patterm one bolt at a time after the 2 centre bolts are tightened. Keep in mind that new head bolts MUST be used. These are called "torque to yield" bolts and permantly stretch during initial install. So, 1. 51 ft lbs and 2. 90-100 degrees. I've done this a long time and basically if you do not have a degree adapter for your torque wrench, it works out to be about 70 ft lbs. Let me know if you need anything else.
