I just wonder if you have an issue with the starter bendix? Check this out.
Did you change the fuel filter as well? I always change that when replacing fuel pumps.
Is this no start condition happening after the new fuel pump installation?If so, you will have to check actual fuel flow and pressure.You could give it a shot of quick start and see if it is capable of running with quick start as fuel.Then you will know it is a fuel delivery problem for sure.

Sounds like dirty gas and the fuel filter is clogged...try changing the fuel filter...some are under the car, but most are mounted against the firewall in the engine compartment.

Injectors or Carb? is there fuel presurt to the line near the engine and what is the presure.
The mechanoc was it a shop or buddy at home? Can you hear the fuel pump run when the key is turned on?
