What type of fluid goes in the transfer case on a 1997 gmc jimmy , I believe the transfer case is over full.

If it was the transfer, it would not go forward. Probably trouble with the reverse band or clutches.

Hmmm, go down and look at that transfer case: that same hose should connect somewhere there (that's what activates the 2WD shift out): either that, or it should go through the solenoid, and then to the transfer case. The best place to find such a diagram would be a Chilton or Haye's manual, either are invaluable to vehicle service.

There should be a label on the coolant cap that tells you. If not there are two types that fit you make (chevy). Green (ethyl-glycol), or GM's
Dex-cool. In your case I believe the green dyed, ethyl-glycol is for you as GM's change over year is 1997.

Hi, the vacuum switch is located in the top of the transfer case, in the area where the front drve shaft goes out. There is a 3 vacuum hose connector that attaches to it. Good luck...Coop

That hose is just a breather hose to vent the pressure inside the transfer case.

sounds like you have an issue with the motor on the transfer case. these do go bad quite often

I Drive A 1975 Chevy K10 PKP FullTime 4X4 NP203 & A 1980 GMC Jimmy Lock-Outs 4X4 NP205, And I Drive Them Once A Month At 55 MPH For 10 Miles (On Pavement). Keeps The System Lubed Up & Moving. Have Done This For The Last 15 Years I Have Owned Them. KEEP THEM SERVICED. Low Oil Is A Transfer Case Killer. Also Put The Correct Type Of Fluid In, Each Transfer Case Takes A Different Type Of Fluid, Call Dealer Shop For Correct Fluid Type. Some Take Dextron III Or 10-40 Engine Oil Depends On Transfer Case.

Your power steering tank will not hold more than 2 pints. First check with your owners manuel to be sure of the proper fluid. With the small bottle of steering fluid, add slowly. check every so often with the dip stick until it says full.
