Black smoke is usually unburnt fuel. I would check the lambda sensors in the exhaust.

SOURCE: engin light is on

the check engine light can come on for any number of reasons mostly emissions related problems. the first step is to identify the code responsible for the light. there are many auto parts stores that will scan the vehicle free of charge for you. i suggest that first.

SOURCE: 2005 chevy colorado abs fault

Sounds like water getting in one of the connectors. You will need to see what fault code is in there when the light comes on, then look at that sensor.

After a long trip my chevy colorado will have white smoke come from the tail pipe after restarting and then stops after a few minutes ??? I need to use it on trips. What is happening?

White smoke is from water in the exhaust.
A failing head gasket can cause this.
Is your coolant level droping
Goes the oil on your dipstick look milky
Both of these are symptoms of a blown head gasket.

the problem can also be a cracked head or cylinder wall

Have a leak down test done to confirm if its a head gasket leak.

2005 Chevy Colorado edit

If you put the tail gate down, there is 2 screw (phillips) that holds the tail light in place. Remove them & you can twist the bulb out. Thats it, put back together in reverse. Hope this helps.
