To fix a rack leak you need to rebuild the entire unit. This is not a DIY project.

if you have a leak from the back of the rack your sector shaft seal is defective. to replace it you need to remove the rack and do it on the bench.remove the locking nut and pull the seal from inside.if you are a rooky replace the rack with a rebuild one. good luck.

its not a simple task .. you will need a lift .. remove the tires from front ..disconnect outer tierod ends.. inside remove the steering shaft bolt.. back under van for rest... remove the frame crash support.. its black metal... remove the evap canister.. remove the leak detection pump... its under rack... remove the lines ... catch the fluid... remove the three rack to frame bolts.. remove the roll pin that hold lower steering shaft to rack... to install just revers directions

You can change the seal, but the new one will most likely leak soon after, the seal starts leaking because of problems in the rack from wear, I would try it but if it leaks soon after replace the rack, they are cheap rebuilt.

SOURCE: rack and pinion leak

It needs replaced a rebuilt unit cost $350.00 and you need the tools to remove the tie rod ends and you have to unhook the steering wheel, if you have a hoist it's not to bad but a do it yourselfer it's a pretty big job, the fluid is that color because it's sucking air into the fluid because of the leak and the shaking is caused by one side not holding hydrolic pressure because of the leak and wore out inner tierod ends. If you do do it you need a whole lot more information and much more instructions to do it, afterwords it will have to be alingned, having done it before and having the proper air tools I can do one in three hours. You might take a week but it would be a learning experince.

Power steering pump replaced 2x still leaks??? 2000 dodge dakota 3.9 2wd

It may not be the pump that is the cause of the leak, it may be the result of a different problem. (bad PS line, clogged, stripped connector, bad rack & pinion if equipped)

Rack and pinion? have play in wheel no sign of leaks new power steering pump installed

Hi Gunny, If your vehicle is fitted with rack and pinion steering also check the rack ends for play. The rack ends are the rods which the tie rod ends screw onto. The other end fits onto the rack of the rack and pinion. To work on those you will need to remove the rubber boots and loosen the locking washer, they can then be loosened with a wrench. If they are worn the play will be evident in the steering. When replacing them also replace the rubber boots. If the boots are worn and road grime and dust enters, you will see leakage from the rack and pinion in the near future. I always thought the Dakota was fitted with a steering box? Regards John
