Sounds like your gear shift has slipped so it is out of whack You need to take it to a mechanic and have it reset to its original position.I had one that my mechanic had to reset and put it back where it belongs.
Just to clarify, your saying with the key mechanically in the off position, the engine won't die, unless in reverse. Your not saying you can't get the key, mechanically, in the off position? Usually primary voltage to ignition coil, goes hot with key on. Key off, no primary voltage to coil and no spark. The engine can't run w/o spark unless it is dieseling.
If you have primary voltage to coil, key in the off position, either that circuit is shorted to voltage or something wrong with ignition switch. Just my opinion.
SOURCE: can not get gear shift into park
your shifter linkage is mis alligned. could have hit it while 4 bying? anyway, look up the info for this procedure or buy the book on it at the parts store. have a partner sit in the car while you adjust to let you know when it is in place. easy fix
SOURCE: cannot shift the car into park neutral or reverse.
I had a car do this once and the problem was simple, the gear shift rod had loosened and shifted position. Check the rod at the transmission and on the shifter.
SOURCE: Everytime I put my car i park it goes into reverse.
It sounds like you have a damaged shifter cable. It is an adjustable cable but if it is that far out of adjustment then it is probably damaged. Replace it.
SOURCE: pulled in parking lot put in park tuned off and
Your description sounds like you THOUGHT that you had park, I suggest that you closely inspect and re adjust the shifter fo be certain that park= park, exactly. A little off one way or the other is not acceptable...
You can often feel the detents of the trans, is your shifter and indicator centered in the gear position?

SOURCE: 1991 Caprice No reverse. Moves in neutral. All forward gears OK.
This is Ron out of Vero Beach Florida. I have been doing trannys for years. The problem you described is caused (more than likely) by a seized clutch pack. Depending on the trans, and your car should be RWD with a 700r4 tranny, there are several sets of clutch packs and at least one band. Automatic transmissions rely on fluid pressure to "engage" the correct set of clutch discs, at the right time , to engage and change gears. I have seen in the past, where a customer parks his car for the evening and the next morning, no move. What happened?? More than likely, a clutch pack was on it\'s way out but cause the car was hot the plates were free, but after cooling, they can weld themselves together and actually "lock-up". In the morning you know the end result. Your tip on "moves in Nuetral" is the give away. Ron
