My 2003 f250 6.0 is only allowing air to come out of the defrost portion of the vent system. However, if I switch the 4x4 on, it does lock the hubs and allows the vents to change to whichever setting desired... for about a minute or so before reverting back to the defrost vent. Then, when I switch the 4x4 off, it gives you another minute or so of choosing whatever vent you want before reverting back to the defrost on its own. What part do you think is bad?

You have a vacuum leak.Defrost is the default postion(no vacuum).
See if you can locate the small black vacuum line that goes inside the vehicle on the passenger side near the heater core. The trace it back, should see it going to a canister then to the intake manifold.Make sure it is not disconnected or broken somewhere.

Sounds like you have a supply vacuum problem. When you lose supply vacuum to the control head it defaults to defrost.

I found a broken vacuum hose on top of the intake which runs the controls

There is a vacuum leak under the hood. Find the vacuum line on the passenger side where it comes through the firewall and follow it to the engine. You system needs vacuum to operate and without it the default setting is on defrost for safety reasons.

Check your vacuum pump located on the right side fenderwell. see if its running. Check the vacuum hose at the hubs for leaks or damage. repair if damaged. check for other vacuum leaks such as the grey hose going to the heater control valve.
