Did you try resistance testing or voltage testing the wiring ?

I have not done that yet. But thank you, I will try that.

Did you test it with the key on ?

  • Teresa Bishop
    Teresa Bishop Mar 19, 2019

Yes sir, definitely with the key on. I had also pulled the MAF before trying the coolant temp sensor and that didn't allow it to start.

Does the mass air flow sensor have power to it ?

  • Teresa Bishop
    Teresa Bishop Mar 19, 2019

I have not checked that yet but was going to be my next step. Power to MAF and checking the power to the cam sensor and crank sensor as well. I did just change the crank sensor but did not test the connector or wires. Did pull the spark plugs and have spark. Thank you so much for all your help.

What do the spark plugs look like ?

  • Teresa Bishop
    Teresa Bishop Mar 21, 2019

I pulled the wires and they all had spark but the plugs looked a little worn out so the spark plugs are brand new.

What brand plugs and what are they gapped at ?

  • Teresa Bishop
    Teresa Bishop Mar 21, 2019

They are NGK Laser OE and gapped at .044 per my specs. Once it's running without the coolant temp sensor, it's running fabulous.

I'm thinking the engine coolant temperature sensor may be leaning the mixture too much or shorting the five volt reference .

I finally did. Replaced coolant temp sensor and the connector (had to order the connector online) and starts and runs great! Thank you for all your help!

Most vehicles in the last 25 years or so when then coolant temp sensor is bad it will run like dukey or not run at all!

Sounds like it could be a bad temp sensor. Have you tried pumping the gas pedal while you crank it with the temp sensor plugged in?

SOURCE: ignition on but will not crank over

Easiest way to tell if it is your starter is to have someone hold the key on and lightly tap on the starter. If it is the starter this should do the trick. If not, you have an electrical problem somewhere.

SOURCE: How difficult is it to change the crankshaft

Hello erosgirl32....according to the service manual for the 1.8 litre sentra, it is located under the starter at the rear of the engine.
This is not an easy job for the do-it-your-selfer.

SOURCE: 2004 Nissan Sentra difficulty starting

check your fuel filter and changing the plugs couldnt hurt. make sure you use ngk or nd plugs for this. i am a big proponent of manufacturer parts. they were designed for the vehicle.

2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R cranks but won't start!

It is not a problem of sensor as it is not showing any dashboard light, neither it seems to be a problem of battery as battery gets charged after driving if the alternator is working fine or otherwise it won't start at all after overnight standing. It could be a problem of starter solenoid as it has copper windings and when the copper winding gets old it functions intermittently. I am sharing a video that will explain it better.

2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R Cranks but won't start!

It could be the fuel system.
It could either flooding or starving for fuel.
If injectors are fouled badly it will wet the plugs and not fire.
If plugs are pitted that makes it easier to flood. (check plug tip condition, check all plug wires and boots are good)

If it is starving -- fuel pump weak (going to fail).
Need to test fuel pump pressure.

I have a 2004 NISSAN SENTRA SE R SPEC V (Nismo), my car sputters

You have 2 Problems, First problem batteries dying you have to make sure connections secure and alternator is charging your batteries (go to an Autozone or Discount advanced they will tell you). The Sputtering is either a bad SPARK PLUG or a damaged Cable going to the spark plug..Change them every 2 years.
