2003 Chevy tracker issues starting When attempting to start it turns over a bit but then stops then I hear clicking and then a buzz but won’t start, over time the turning over went away when trying to start. I’ve replaced the battery 3 times within 4 months and it was a 24F from Walmart. 1. My initial thing was that it was the battery thus the changing out 3 times the first 2 batteries had blown cells but the last one tested good 2. My second thought was the alternator so I took it and had it tested and it tested good 3 times 3. I don’t believe it could be the starter since I can jump start the car, although it dies after like 15 minutes so I’m kinda unsure here I replaced the battery with one from a different store after calling them and being told my car needed a battery from group 85 would that be a cause for it not staying charged? Can anyone tell me what issues might be happening I just don’t want to keep fixing the same issue repeatedly!?

If you have a voltmeter, with the car running check the voltage across the battery posts. It should be around 13.8. If it’s 12 volts or less, even tho your alternator tests out good, it’s not charging the battery and the car will run off the battery until it drains the battery. I’d check the wires coming from your alternator to make sure they have a good connection and not broken and I’d check your fuse box for a blown fuse as well assuming you don’t have a radio or amplifier or something else wires up that stays on all the time. Some alternators are 1 wire and it usually has a wire going directly to the positive battery cable. Also could have a bad fusible link

I had a blown 15 amp fuse that I replaced I also replaced the battery connectors the battery tests at the correct voltage when the car is on and off
How do I go about checking to see if the cord connected to the alternator is good? I have a single wire alternator so it connects to the back

  • John l Mar 14, 2019

The car runs at least without turning off after 15 minutes and I can actually drive it also a bit usure how to check for a fusible link

So will it start ok when it’s cold but not wanna start after you’ve been driving it? How close is your starter to the exhaust? And does your starter have a heat shield over it? Also did you check your connections at the starter? I ran into a problem once where an alternator checked out fine. It put out the amount of voltage it was suppose to until the heat from the engine made the alternator hot, there are copper windings inside that have a clear coating on them that are tightly wound, when copper heats up it expands and contracts. What happened was the coating would rub back and forth from heating up and cooling down until it wore the coating off then it caused the alternator to short out. When you first start it the alternator was cool so the copper windings weren’t touching each other so the car would run fine. After the alternator got heated up the copper windings expanded and touched each other shorting out.Check the voltage after you run the car for 15-20 minutes.

Check it at the battery after 15-20 minutes and see what the voltage is. A car I repaired went from 13.8 when you first start it to about 4 volts after it had been running a while, which ran the battery down and you couldn’t start the car without charging the battery back up

Flat or faulty battery or maybe faulty starter solenoid or starter - get the battery load checked first ?

SOURCE: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Alternator issues?

have the alternator regulator and diodes tested. sometimes when the regulators fail they allow ac voltage to go to the battery. ac voltage doesn't charge the battery properly (causes it to deep cycle and shortens its life) and causes all sorts of funny problems with the car. also make sure the battery is secured properly, vibration isn't good for them at all.

SOURCE: Hi car would not start,

I suggest taking the battery out and have it tested first. the heat can kill the charge on a battery even though it is only a few tears old. if the battery test good then have the alternator checked.the alternator on your car is on the right side of the car near the rear of the engine compartment.

SOURCE: 2002 Ford Taurus, V6 3.0 won't start. Attempted to start, but stop mid start. No clicking, just slience. What else?

Just to the left of the battery is the main fuse junction box and below that under the manifold is the starter with the solenoid on top with the positive cable going to the starter check for a loose connection, and the battery ground sould be right there nearby the starter grounded to the block check it also. You could have a bad cable although it may look okay under the insulator the copper cable may be damaged test with a volt meter while moving the pos and neg cables at both ends.

2003 chevy tracker starts ok cold; but when hot it starts and then stalls.

It could be a clogged catalytic converter or bad o2 sensor. go to autozone and have them scan it ( for free) and post what codes and probable fixes they give you (they'll give you a print out)

I have a 1996 chevy geo tracker it won't start

Hi Leigh, Have the charging rate of the alternator checked. If you have a voltage test meter, select a voltage range above 15 volts DC and measure the voltage across the positive and negative poles of the battery. It will show a low voltage before the vehicle is started. Jump start and measure the voltage again. If the voltage is about thirteen volts or more, the problem is with the battery, which you'll need to replace. If the voltage across the terminals remains at the voltage first recorded before start up, the problem is with the alternator. Regards John

1995 geo tracker won't start. I've replaced everything except the ignition switch. It used to click when i turn the key, now it won't even click.

DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY AND RECONNECT, THIS SHOULD RESET THE BRAIN.

ALSO...WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY, LISTEN TO HEAR IF YOU CAN HEAR THE FUEL PUMP COME ON...IF NOT, GUESS WHAT? HOPEFULLY NOT!... BUT,YOU MAY NEED TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP, IF YOU CAN'T HEAR IT WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY, AFTER YOU'VE RESET THE BATTERY!

HOPE THIS HELPS!
