The auto transmission hard shifts 2 to 3 - really hard. When the tach is not jumping, shifting is OK. When tach is jumping, if I shift 2-3 manually, all is well, no hard shift. So I am assuming the shift points are base on tach speed and when not functioning properly, it hard shifts. Is there a electronic tach send device that may be causing my problem?

Often this kind of problem it is caused from faulty throttle position
sensor, you find out by connecting a code reader to your car computer.
throttle position sensor tells to your transmission control module how
you are using the throttle, so that the car automatic transmission can
shift to right gear, when this is faulty often you have transmission
faults related to engine rpms and temperature, this can explain a trans
problem happening only when engine is hot. In some case it is not the sensor, but the computer module controlling transmission that is faulty. To find out cause for the problem you need to connect a code reader to transmission module and to main computer module (ECU). The code reader will return fault codes that allow to locate the problem. this kind of job can be done at any qualified garage.

You have a engine RPM sensor that is not working correctly. Computer thinks you have push gas pedal to the floor and is providing that type of shift. It may be the sensor attached to your gas pedal has worn out.
FIRST CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL MAKE SURE ITS CORRECT.IF FLUID LEVEL OKAY SOUND LIKE STICKING SHIFT VALVES.CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID + FILTER.GET SOME TRANSMEDIC ADD 1/2 TO NEW TRANSMISSION FLUID THIS HELP FREE STUCK SHIFT VALVES IN VALVE BODY DONT OVER FILL ADD IT IN.BUT DONT OVER FILL TRANSMISSION.IF THIS DONT HELP.YOU COULD HAVE VALVE BODY PROBLEM.
Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either
reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh.
All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS. Good luck Auto Zone or Parts Source has this part and can be replaced with in 20 min. Both parts store will have the step by step instructions and i believe the cost is around $65.00 for the TPS which is better then a transmission replacement.
Had the transmission serviced in a while? would be a good idea to have someone look at it for you. I wouldn't continue to drive it until you do a diagnostic and have it properly serviced. Transmissions on that truck could cost you upwards of $7,500. and I think you would prefer spending the $ 350. it would cost for a servicing.
