Well your mechanic he is not a proper mechanic as i would make one ,failing which shop around scrappers or a few hydraulic repair shops who will have the tools to repair or make you a new one which your so called back street mechanic should know about.sounds like you need to find a proper qualified mechanic instead of a dealer type of semi skilled unit changer.
I just had my 2004 TL's timing belt replaced in Jan 2010 by the dealer and the total repair for belt, water pump and all other normally suggested parts came to $859.90. My car had 139,990 miles and the work was done at the Acura dealer in Jacksonville Florida.
It doesn't sound good, does it. I honestly couldn't tell you, but he should have checked the fuses, resistors, and your blower motor before he told you that one. If he didn't, go elsewhere. What you should do is get a Hayne's repair manual, and check it out. Or, get a test light, and do some checking. First check the fuse and see if there is power to the blower motor. If there is, then check the resistors, and if they are okay, then the blower motor itself is no good, and will need to be replaced.
Going to a mechanic is just like going to the doctor. It's always good to do your homework before you go so that the doctor and his best friend at the drugstore don't get too many free trips to Hawaii.
I really think a repair manual would help you.
i understand why you want to do it yourself - it's expensive to have it done by a mechanic. that's because it's a major job to remove the engine, takes 4-5 hrs. i avoided having it done by having an honest mechanic i've been going to for a long time do something else (sorry, i don't know what) that fixed the problem temporarily. he told me it must be done after 90k miles or so, so i'm saving up.
