Your Dodge Ram 1500 had options for 3 different rim sizes. They were 17", 20", and 22" rims from the factory. the largest wheel recommendations for handling and speedometer accuracy are as follows;
17" rims = 285 - 70R17
20" rims= 275 - 60R20
22" rims= 285 - 45R22
As a tire size rule, the first number is the millimeter distance from the road to the bottom edge of the rim such as the 285 then the second number say the 45 is the percentage the difference the width is to the height of 285mm. The letter R stands for radial and the last number denotes the size of the rim it fits on.

It will depend on the size of wheel rim your using. The two standard sizes used are:-
265/70R17
275/60R20
If you are looking at putting oversize tyres on it you need to consider a few things.
First the tyre tread width to prevent it rubbing inside the wheel arches. The side wall height is also important because if it's bigger than standard it can affect the accuracy of your speedometer.
If your changing to different wheel rims you'll need the correct off set for both the tyre AND rim. The offset is how far the centre line of the wheel sits in or sticks out of wheel arch.
Yes, trying to upgrade to a bigger size. How much bigger can I go for more height and width?
This all depends on how much height and width you actually want. A small amount of increase, (A couple of inches for both), can be achieved by using different rims with appropriate tyres and a suspension lifting kit.
Going too extreme can create a whole list of necessary heavy duty upgrades such as hubs and axles.
For width you can use a wheel rim with a greater ‘Negative Offset’ and a wider ‘rim width’. This will give you wheels that stick out of the wheel arches more allowing you to fit wider tyres. Make sure they are the correct rims to fit that truck to make sure the lug nut pattern, (the PCM), matches.
Are you wanting height on only the tyre or the whole truck? For the tyres use a smaller diameter rim and the correct size tyre. For the whole truck you will need to fit a suspension kit designed to raise the ride height of the vehicle.
Simply increasing both the rim size AND the tyre profile, (side wall size), will seriously screw up what your speedo shows. A bigger wheel and tyre combo will show as one speed but your actually going faster.
Thanks for that! I was looking for a much simpler answer...so much involved. I was just looking to buy new tires without having to upgrade anything but the tires. How about 33/12.50r20’s?
For tyre sizes I would recommend going to a Good tyre specialist to get the best advice on which to go for. It is worth remembering that Smoother ‘road’ style tyres and All Terrain ‘Chunky’ tyres can feel and sound noticeably different from each other when you drive them.
Ok. Thanks a bunch!
