2004 Cadillac srx 4.6 awd faulty fuel gauge. Bought the car with a bad sending unit. Would read full, then sometimes at about a quarter and occasionally while driving it would shut off and would not start again. Would throw a couple gallons in it and it would start right away, I'd get it to the gas station just for it to only take a few more gallons before going full. So, whenever the car shuts off it's never been empty, the sensor must read empty and trick the computer causing it to shut off so it doesn't burn the fuel pump out (I would assume is my guess) . Well, I replaced the fuel pump assembly that had the sending unit as well built in. Got it all in, car starts right away after priming it a few times, runs great, but fuel gauge will read half full for about a minute, then drop all the way to empty. Any suggestions on what might be going on here?
I will check the sensor connections and then the sensor. Also double check the fuse box operating the fuse for that sensor, corrosion causes all kinds of electrical problems. Lastly I will check the wiring if not fixed checking tge sensor unit and fuses. Ihope this fix your problem
if it worked for a short period of time after doing the pump/sending unit the check the connections going to the pump/sending unit they would have been moved around doing the pump

check the sending unit in the tank when they go bad they will miss read the level. Sometimes the car can be full and the gauge will read only a quarter tank or it might be low and will read 3/4 to full.
The problem is almost always caused by a defective fuel level sending unit inside the fuel tank. To replace the sending unit you must remove the gas tank from the car and replace the fuel pump module which contains the fuel level sending unit. Repair cost is about $600.00 USD's

You have to drop the fuel tank to access the fuel pump and sending unit. Yes the fuel pump and gauge sending unit are separate but connect together in one assembly.
Your car will overheat very fast and you may either notice coolant leaking from the location of the pump and also possibly a squealing noise due to a bad bearing. Overheating can also be caused by a bad thermostat.
