First step, check your p/s fluid level. Make sure you got enough oil in there. Ps, these cars prefer a good dextron 3 oil over just normal ATF.
Do you get any noise when it goes stiff? If so it may require bleeding

I had the same thing (hard to turn, especially in cold temps, wouldn't return to straight.....). Since the power steering fluid was full, I decided it had to be "gunk" in the fluid, so I took my '03 Kia Sedona in to have the power steering fluid flushed & filled (over $100 I think!).

No better. So I took it to another mechanic and he said that the "U-Bolt" had frozen up. He changed it (part was $117 and labor was 2 hours, for a total cost of $350ish) and it's good as new now!

SOURCE: power steering

Sounds like a bad steering rack & pinion assembly... is it only bad in one direction or both...?
If both then it's the rack assembly... Hope this helps...;-)

SOURCE: power steering is stiff some times on my kia

It might be a failing power steering rack as well...classic symptoms are very stiff when first starting vehicle or at a stoplight, then loosens up as rpms increase.

ck the PS fluid for a burnt smell. If so, flush the system & replace the pump. U also have to make sure your tires, chassis (alignment) , rack & pinion ( if equipped) are in good order too. Ck the PS fluid w the vehicle running. & if u flush it, make sure its full when done by cking it running.

I have noticed that at times my steering on my kia sedona lx 2004 gets stiff like the power steering is gone .. as well my coolant levels are fine but i have no heat nor is the a/c blowing cold air .. what...

Some modern cars have an electrically driven pump to supply high pressure oil to operate the power steering. However, most cars have an oil pump for the steering which is turned by a belt from the crankshaft pulley. If the belt is loose or slipping, heavy steering will be the result, especially noticable at low speeds. Check belt for tightness, and check oil level is not low, possibly due to a leak?

Hello! I am the owner of a 2012 Kia Rio EX with sportmatic. Recently, I had begun to notice that my crank sensor may be failing. The odomoter reading is now 146,075, and the following symptoms have been noticed: intermittent stalling with tach dropping to "0", poor power/acceleration when on a steep incline, and after restarting after an engine stall and the accellerating in drive versus sportmatic, the engine would seem to slip at higher RPMs and has appeared to have entered a form of a safe "limp" mode. In regard to the intermittent engine stalls, this mainly occurs while stopped, and has infrequently happened while the vehicle is in motion where at times when pulling off road was unsafe or not an option, I've been able to restart after quickly shifting into neutral while the vehicle would coast. And with the brief stumbles in the engine (believed to be a possible misfire), this has happened maybe only twice in a 2-2.5 week period; In regards to the loss of power/performance after a stall, I noticed the vehicle would operate with some normalcy after switching into sportmatic (autostick), the issue with poor acceleration with steep inclines seems to resolve itself, and I would no longer have an engine stall. I also live in Butler County, PA where emissions inspections are not mandated. No alarming or burning odors have been noticed, other than a very minute trace of fuel when I have to depress the accelerator when restarting the vehicle after a stall which dissapates almost instantly. When the stall occurs and/or the tach drops to zero, after driving a while or multiple engine restarts, the tach would become operable again. Prior to the OBDII scan, I attempted some basic checks and inspected the wiring (ie disconnecting the negative battery terminal to reset the ECM, etc.) but to no avail. The OBDII came back as a "Crankshaft sensor A circuitry" malfunction and a "CAT EFFICENCTY". I have not experienced any rough/high idling, engine knocking, or vibrations in the steering wheel.
