I have used Haynes service manuals for (hate to admit it) many decades and I recommend you check to see if this one:

doesn't cover your engine.

I have found darned few 'holes' in their coverage.

Auto parts stores carry these and I suspect that even though sealed, the sales people will not give you too hard of a time if you explain you want to insure you are getting what you need.

Haynes is not the same as it was 20 years ago before they were acquired by Chilton but the price/utility ratio is still pretty good.
Mostly I'm annoyed by the move to cheaper paper (newsprint)that is fussier, picks up dirt, tears more easily than the better paper of yore.

How do you get balance shaft drive sprockets off?

You need to remove the balance shafts first. Be VERY careful or you will end up breaking off the tab that the small hold down bolt goes through. You need to remove this little bolt first of course. I found that using a pry bar on the bottom of the sprocket itself seemed to work best.
Once you have the balance shaft out, clamp it in a vise using wood or something similar so that you do not damage any if the surface that rides on the bearing. Then remove the 15 mm bolt holding the gear (sprocket) on. Re-install the new gear and torque to 37 ft-lbs. The new gear is slotted so it can only go on one way. Do not mix up the intake & exhaust balance shaft gears. Good luck.

What is the torque setting on the bolt that fastens the drive pulley to the crank shaft on a 98 Plymouth voyager 3.0 L engine.

Torque setting for harmonic balancer / pulley on the 2.5 and 3.0 engine is 132 ft/lbs

I have a 2001 Olds Aurora with a V6 3.5 and I need the timing diagram for this. I have looked everywhere and can not find a book with it in it. Would you happen to have this??

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft so the No. 1 piston is at TDC and the mark on the crankshaft is at the 4 o-clock position.
  2. Rotate the balance shaft so the timing mark is at the 5 o-clock position.
    NOTE Be sure the painted links are facing the front of the engine.
  3. Install the timing chain on the sprockets.
  4. Center the mark on the left intake camshaft sprocket between the 2 painted links.
  5. Lift the chain onto the right intake camshaft sprocket. While doing this, align the marks on the balance shaft and crankshaft sprockets with the painted marks on the chain.
  6. Verify that all of the timing marks are aligned.
  7. Install the primary chain tensioner shoe. Torque the bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  8. Compress the primary chain tensioner using the following steps:
    1. Rotate the ratchet release lever counterclockwise and hold it.
    2. Press the tensioner shoe in and hold it.
    3. Release the ratchet lever and slowly release the pressure on the shoe.
    4. Insert a pin through the hole in the lever as the lever moves to the first click. The ratchet should hold the shoe in the compressed position.
      NOTE Be sure the lever on the tensioner is facing you when installed.

  9. Install or connect the following:

    Primary chain tensioner. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm); then remove the chain tensioner pin. 4 chain guide access plugs. Torque the plugs to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Front engine lift bracket. Torque the hex head bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the internal drive bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). CMP sensor. Torque the bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  10. Remove the camshaft holding tools.
  11. Place a small bead of RTV sealant on the 3 areas indicated in the diagram.
  12. Install or connect the following:

    Front cover with a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm) and the coolant drain plug to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Crankshaft balancer. Torque the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm); then an additional 120 degree turn.
  13. Raise the engine cradle and install new bolts. Torque the bolts to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
  14. Coat the sub-frame bushings with rubber lubricant.
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump with a new gasket. Torque the bolts to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm). Belt tensioner. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Idler pulley. Torque the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Power steering pump pulley Drive belt Underhood accessory wiring junction block Washer and coolant reservoirs Battery and tray Front diagonal brace Rocker arm covers. Torque the bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Negative battery cable
  16. Refill the cooling system.
  17. Refill the crankcase.
  18. Start the engine and verify no leaks.
Secondary Chain
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the rocker arm cover and install camshaft holding fixture J-42038.
  4. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts and install the timing chain holding fixture J-42042 on the cylinder head.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Sprockets and chain Secondary timing sprocket and chain

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Secondary timing chain on the sprockets, with the drive pins at the 12 o-clock positions Sprockets and chain assembly onto the camshafts, with the chain properly aligned on the tensioner
  2. Remove the timing chain holding fixture
  3. Install the sprocket bolts. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm); then an additional 45 degree turn.
  4. Remove the camshaft holding fixture.
  5. Install or connect the following:

My balance shaft belt broke while I was driving. It stripped some of the teeth off the timing belt and Im pretty sure it jumped time. I need a diagram to show the timing marks and how to get it back in...

see diagrams from autozone.com. Cam sprocket has an "UP" label, but also 2 scribes on the sides to align to upper head surface. The critical part of the job is keeping tension on the side of the belt that is opposite from the tensioner as the tensioner is released onto the belt. The timing marks must be aligned when the job is done.

  1. Install the camshaft timing sprocket so that the UP mark is up and the TDC marks are parallel to the cylinder head gasket surface. Install the key and tighten the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  2. Install the crankshaft sprocket so that the TDC mark aligns with the pointer on the oil pump. Install the spacers with their concave surfaces facing in. Install the key. If equipped, install the TDC sensor assembly back into position before installing the timing belt.
  3. Install and tension the timing belt. Use a 6 x 1.0 mm x 25 mm bolt threaded through the cam belt tensioner plate to temporarily hold the tensioner.
  4. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley and rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 5-6 turns to be sure the belt is properly seated.
  5. Set the No. 1 piston at TDC for its compression stroke.



WARNING If any binding is felt when adjusting the timing belt tension by turning the crankshaft, STOP turning the engine, because the pistons may be hitting the valves.

  1. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise so that the camshaft pulley moves only 3 teeth beyond its TDC mark.
  2. Loosen, then retighten the temporary cam belt tensioner bolt.
  3. If the rear balance shaft sprocket/gear case assembly was removed, perform the following:
    1. If the rear balance shaft was moved, rotate the balance shaft until the 6 x 1.0mm x 100 mm bolt can be installed into the maintenance hole to the scribed line.
    2. Align the notch of the balance shaft sprocket edge with the pointer on the gear case. Install the rear balance shaft sprocket/gear case assembly using a new O-ring coated with fresh engine oil. The balance shaft sprocket should be installed in the TDC position. The pointer on the gear should align with the pointer on the oil pump housing plate.
    3. Tighten the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  4. If the front balance shaft sprocket was removed, perform the following:
    1. Install a suitable and sturdy screw driver or drift through the maintenance hole in the shaft behind the sprocket to hold the front balance shaft.
    2. Install the front balance shaft sprocket and mounting nut. Torque the nut to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).

  5. Make sure the balance shafts and crankshaft are in the TDC position.
  6. Remove the crankshaft pulley, and if removed, install the balance shaft belt drive sprocket.
  7. Install the balance shaft belt, making sure the balance shafts and sprockets are still in the TDC position.
  8. If removed, install the balance shaft belt tensioner and tension the balance shaft belt.
  9. Loosen, then retighten the tensioner adjusting nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  10. Remove the 6 x 1.0mm x 100mm rear balance shaft holding bolt.
  11. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley and rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions counterclockwise, stopping at TDC.



WARNING If any resistance is felt, stop immediately and determine the cause.

  1. Recheck that all of the TDC marks align for both the camshaft and balance shafts.
  2. Loosen, then retighten the tensioner adjusting nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  3. Remove the 6 x 1.0 mm x 25 mm bolt used to secure the camshaft timing belt tensioner.
  4. Remove the crankshaft pulley and install the lower cover.
  5. Install the crankshaft pulley, lubricate the bolt threads and both sides of the crankshaft pulley bolt with fresh engine oil and tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm). Do Not use an impact wrench.

            1. Install the upper timing cover and the valve cover. Be sure the seals are properly seated.
            2. Install the side engine mount. Tighten the through-bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm). Tighten the mount nut and bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) each.
            3. Remove the floor jack.
            4. Install and tension the alternator belt.
            5. Install the power steering pump and tension its belt.
            6. Install the splash shields.
            7. Reconnect the positive and negative battery cables. Enter the radio security code.
            8. Check engine operation.

            How i fix timing of lantra 1600 cc 95

            Disconnect battery earth lead. Do not turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed. Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine. Turn engine in normal direction of ratation unless otherwise stated, Support engine. Remove, engine mounting, auxilliaty drive belts. Water pump pulley 1. Crankshaft pulley bolts 21. crankshaft pully 2. timing belt covers 3. Turn crankshaft to TDC on No 1 cyclinder. Ensure crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket and balancer shaft sprocket timing marks aligned. Timing marks on camshaft sprockets should align with cylinder head upper face. Dowel pins on camshaft sprockets should face upwards. Slacken tensioner bolt. Move tensioner away from belt and lightly tighten bolt. Remove, automatic tensioner unit bolts. Automatic tensioner unit. Timing belt, crankshaft centre bolt, crankshaft sprocket. Crankshaft sprocket guide washer. Slacken blancer shaft belt tensioner bolt. Move tensioner away from belt and lightly tighten bolt. Remove balancer shaft belt.

            Installation
            Ensuring timing marks arligned. Note timing marks on camshaft sprockets should align with cylinder head upper face. Exhaust sprocket mark is on recess, but inlet sprocket mark is on tooth. Note: to check oil pump sprocket positioned correctly, removing blanking plug from cylinder block. Insert 8mm diameter Phillips srcrewdriver in hole. Ensure screwdriver is inserted 60mm from face of cylinder block. if screwdriver can only be inserted 20mm: turn oil pump sprocket 360°. Insert screwdriver again. Fit balancer shaft belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket. Slacken balancer shaft belt tensioner bolt. Turn tensioner clockwise to tension belt. Tighten bolt to 15-22Nm. Apply thumb pressure to belt. Belt should deflect 5-7 mm. If not repeat tensioning procedure. Install crankshaft sprocket guide washer, crnakshaft sprocket. Tighten crankshaft cente bolt. Tighten torque:110-130 Nm. Note ensure crankshaft sprocket guide washer is fitted correclty. Oil treads and contact face of crankshaft body before fitting. Check tensioner body for leakage or damage replace if necessary. Check pushrod protrusion is 12mm. If not replace automatic tensioner unit. Slowly compress pushrod into tensioner body until holes aligned. Resistance should be felt. Place flat washer under tnesioner body to avoid damage to body end plugs. Retain pushrod with suitable pin through hole in tensioner body. install automatic tensioner unit to cylinder block. Tighten bolts to 22-27Nm. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at the tensioner pulley. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt. Turn tensioner pully clockwise to temporarily tension belt. Tighten bolts to 43-45Nm. Turn crankshaft slowly 1/4 turn anti-cockwise. Turn crankshaft clockwise until timing marks alligned. Slacken tensioner pully bolt. Fit tool to tensioner pulley. Tool No 09244 28100. Apply clockwise torque of 2,6-2,8 Nm to tensioner pulley. Tighten bolt to 43-45Nm. Insert special tool in timing belt rear casing. Tool no 09244-28000. Screw in tool until pin can be removed from automatic tensioner unit. Remove special tool. Tool nr 09244-28000. turn crankshaft two turns clockwise. Wait 15 minutes. Ensure timing marks aligned. Check extended length of pushrod is 3,8-4,5mm. Install components in reverse order of removal. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolts, Tighten torque 20-30Nm

            I need to replace my timing belt on my hyundia elantra 2003 with 1997 cc engine

            Removal: Support engine: remove -engine mounting, auxiliary drive belt, water pump pulley, crankshaft pully bots & crankshaft pully, timing belt covers....turn crankshaft to TDC on No 1 cylinder, ensure crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket & balancer shaft sprocket timing marks lighned. Pls note: Timing marks on camshaft sprockets should align with cylinder head uppter face, dowl pins on camshaft sprockets should face downwards....Slacken tensioner botl. Move tensioner away from belt & tighten bolt.
            Remove: automatic tensioner unit bolts, automatic tensioner unit, timing belt, crankshaft bolt, crankshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket guide washer...slacken balancer shaft belt rensioner bolt, move tensioner away from belt & lightly tighten bolt...Remove balancer shaft belt.

            Installation:
            ensure timeing marks aligned.Note: Timing marks on camshaft sprockets ahould align with cylinder head upper face, exhaust sprocket mark is on recess but inlet sprocket mark is on tooth. To check oil pump sprocket positionded sorrectly: remove blanking plug from cylinder block, insert 8mm diameter Phillips screwdriver in hole. ensure screwdriver is inserded 60mm from face of cylinder block. If screwdriveer can only be inserted 20mm-turn oil pump sprocket 360". Inset screwdiver again.
            Fit balancer shaft delt in anti-clockwise direction starting at crandkshaft sprocket....Slacken balancer shaft belt tensioner notl, turn tensioner clockwise to tension belt. Tighten bolt to 15-22 Nm... Applu thump pressure to belt at tentioner, belt should deflect 5-7mm. If not: Repeat tensioning procedure.... Install - chankshaft sprocket guide washer & crankshaft sprocket.
            Thighten crankshaft centre bolt, tightening torque:110-130Nm. Please note, ensure crankshaft sprocket guide washer is fittet correctly. oil threads & contact face crankshaft botl before fitting.
