Ignition switch module ? What's the issue ?

  • Jeff Armer
    Jeff Armer Feb 17, 2019

You mean ignition control module ? It doesn't have spark to the spark plugs ? Fuel pump doesn't run ? More then likely the crankshaft position sensor is the problem .

2011 GMC Savanna turn key to start position, key springs back like it is supposed to, starter stays engaged and will not stop unless I turn key off.
Does not attempt to fire, dash lights up, fuel pump does not turn on. We have replaced the ignition key module and it has not solved the issue.

Don't know what you mean by ignition key (switch) module ? No such thing on your vehicle . Ignition switch , the electrical part that is located inside the steering column .

  • Jeff Armer
    Jeff Armer Feb 18, 2019

First off you need to know how this works , turning the key to the start position sends a low voltage input to the BCM - body control module. If there are no anti-theft system problems the BCM will send a message to the engine computer over the C.A.N. data network requesting start . The PCM/ECM will energize the starter relay sending battery voltage to the S terminal on the starter solenoid . Having a qualified repair shop hook up a professional type scan tool an checking BCM DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes is what you should do . Sorry no offence ,but you have no clue about the electronics on your vehicle. Just Replacing parts isn't the way .

The BCM is also the power mode master as GM calls it. Sends messages over the data network to all the modules on the vehicle to set power mode ,ACC,RUN ,crank etc.. Also energizes relays powering up the vehicle . These vehicles are not for a DIYER to try an fix .
    Circuit Description
When the ignition switch is placed in the Start position, a discrete 12-volt signal is supplied to the body control module (BCM) notifying it that the ignition is in the Start position. The BCM then sends a message to the engine control module (ECM) notifying it that CRANK has been requested. The ECM verifies that the transmission is in Park or Neutral. If it is, the ECM then supplies 12 volts to the control circuit of the crank relay. When this occurs, battery positive voltage is supplied through the switch side of the crank relay to the starter solenoid.

    Circuit Description
The communication among control modules is performed primarily through the GMLAN high speed serial data circuit and the GMLAN low speed serial data circuits. The modules that need real time communication are attached to the high speed GMLAN network. The body control module (BCM) is the serial data gateway between the networks. The purpose of the gateway is to translate serial data messages between the GMLAN high speed bus and the GMLAN low speed bus. The Local Interconnect Network (LIN) is another serial data communication network used on this vehicle which is dedicated to the remote compass module (RCM) subsystem. Below are more detailed descriptions of the individual networks. The gateway will interact with each network according to that network's transmission protocol. Refer to Body Control System Description and Operation for more information about the gateway.

  • Jeff Armer
    Jeff Armer Feb 18, 2019

The body control system consists of the body control module (BCM), communications, and various input and outputs. Some inputs, outputs and messages require other modules to interact with the BCM. The BCM also has discrete input and output terminals to control the vehicle's body functions. The BCM is wired to the GMLAN High speed serial data bus and the GMLAN Low speed serial data bus and acts as a gateway between them. If the BCM does not communicate the vehicle will not start due to the inability of the Engine/Powertrain Control Module (ECM/PCM) and Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) Control Module to communicate without the BCM providing the gateway function.

    Power Mode Master
This vehicles BCM functions as the power mode master (PMM). The ignition switch is a low current switch with multiple discrete ignition switch signals to the PMM for determination the power mode that will be sent over the serial data circuits to the other modules that need this information, and so the PMM will activate relays and other direct outputs of the PMM as needed. Refer to Power Mode Description and Operation for a complete description of power mode functions.

SOURCE: gmc savana van will stop running while driving or start sputterin

It could be a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump. Also try replacing the spark plugs and spark plug wires and having the timing checked. Good luck.

SOURCE: 2005 GMC Savana ,where is the OBD-2 link?

They are typically located at the right or left side of the steering column under the dash at the sound panel. Look at the sound panel and you will see a hole in the panel and the connector should be visible.
Let me know.

SOURCE: 1998 GMC Savana, the heater blower wont go off

To repair this replace the blower motor speed control resistor module first. There is also a possibility the blower motor relay is stuck on.

if this has no shut off switch for the passenger airbag then disconnect the yellow connector under the dash on the same side and allow 15 minutes before attempting to work on that side.

There is no user operated key to disable passenger airbag like on most newer cars, for what you are attempting just disconnect the battery! This should allow you to remove the dash without activating the airbag!
