There is a vaccuum operated switch located on the transfer case that sends vaccum to the accuator that pulls a cable that locks the front end in. Check for vac coming in and out of this switch if no vac out replace it. This switch is a very common problem. You can find them at most parts stores in the help section #49315. please rate.

SOURCE: 4 Wheel Drive Problem

Put the key in the run position and turn your 4wd on and off to listen for the electronic acuator to engage and disengage. If your can hear it then it's macanical and a Quick fix. On top of the transfercase on the driver's side, your going to find three vacuume tube connected to a cauume switch that may have gone bad. There common to go bad and there not the bad of a price at the Auto Zone. Check for any cracks on the vacuume line first then get your hands dirty. Good luck and keep an extra switch in your glove box.

I repled the front axel actuator an works fine now no problem. actuator is on the passenger sid back of the front axel pigand has a plug, mine was 2 wireroundpin plug but some have a flat pin 4 wire plug. 70 dollars at NAPA. wasa realy simple replacement didnt even need to jack up the truck. the actuator h a pin that electronically puses out engauging te front axel. a easy test is to put the truck in 4 wheel high. holdthe brak and givei little gas ad havesomeoneelse stand to the side ofthe front of the truck and see if the front axel spins. ifso th actutor is te most likely prblem. hope this helps.

My 4x4 fuse keeps blowing. I put in a new one, shift into 4 wheel drive and it blows. Is it a short or could my 4 wheel drive be out. It is a 1994 chevy suburan.

Try this,on the front axle there is an actuator for the 4x4,unplug it and try to engage 4x4 with it unplugged,if the fuse doesn't blow, actuator is bad.
Also look at the wires going to the actuator they get damaged from brush and things.

4 wheel drive won't engage or light up on 1995 chevy tahoe . It doesn't do anything when I move the gear selector

Had the same problem, so I changed the actuator on the tranfer case. After I did that I still got not nothing. No engagement or a light at the shifter. So i popped the fuse panel cover on the left side of the dash and found the 4wd fuse was fried. Changed it and low and behold I had my 4wd back. So in actuality I just had to to change a fuse. So now I have a spare actuator. Oh well!!!!

2000 blazer 4 wheel drive problem

It's most likely the "four wheel drive actuator" This is located on the front differential housing. It's cylindrical shaped and has a large hex (about
1-1/4") and two wires coming out of it. Usually they short out and blow the fuse but, I've also seen where they just quit working and sometimes they just get slow to work. The "actuator" has a heating element in it and it warms up, some sort gas, causing it to expand thus engaging the front wheels. In cold weather it may take a minute or so for it to engage, so put in four wheel drive and wait for a bit and see what happens.

1995 TAHO 4X4

There is a solenoid (popper thingy) that engages your four wheel drive. It is bad, it costs around eighty bucks, but is easy to fix. Go underneath your truck and look at your transfer case, it should have a wire or two going to it, that wire connects to the solenoid. Remove the solenoid, put the new one in and your light, and your four wheel drive will work again. This is a common problem with that type of four wheel drive system in the year ranges of 88-97.
