Don't just change just the thermostat... change the sensor located in the thermostat housing (if your engine is overheating). The whole works is located inside the timing cover. Sockets: You'll need a 10mm for the timing cover and the 3 bolts on the thermostat cover, and an 8mm for the sensor harness bolts. Then you'll need a 3/4 open end wrench for the sensor.
well lucky you i am a certified volvo tech, mostly all coolant temp sensors are located in the general area of the thermostat housing if not directly in it or on top of it,locate your thermostat and you'll find your sensors, also note that there is two one for the computer and one for the guage, good luck, should be easy from hear on in peace....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The thermostat is normally located in the aluminium elbow that the top radiator hose connects to. The elbow is usually held down by two bolts and it is only necessary to remove these to replace the thermostat. It may not be necessary to remove any hoses. Take care that the new thermostat is correctly located in its recess and the old gasketing has been completely removed and that the new gasket has a smear of gasket cement on it. While tightening the bolts, make sure that the elbow is seating evenly and not catching on the edge of the thermostat or you could crack the elbow.
follow the top radiator hose till you find were it aitches to the engine the housing that the hose hooks up to is the thermostat cover remove thathousing and the thermostat is right under it.......HAVE FUN
It depends on whether you have a 5 or 6 cylinder engine. On the 6 it's located under the timing belt cover. On the 5 it's located just in front of and to the left of the fuel injector rail. If you haven't already, register (it's free) at autozone.com. Once you've done that, look up your vehicle and then search for a thermostat. Click on the thermostat that best fits your needs and look to the right. There will be a repair manual link for step by step instructions on how to remove and install the thermostat.
I recently took my car in for this problem. The thermostat was replaced a year ago. This time they replaced the thermostat and the IAT (air intake temperature sensor). The thermostat was 20 and the IAT was 50, with labor it all came to $140. Most sites online that I found suggested replacing both the sensor and the thermostat at the same time. When the thermostat goes, it usually takes the sensor with it. So I'd have them replace your sensor too. Good luck.
