Carry out regular oil changes and change other filters at regular intervals, to be honest removal of the sump is quite an involved job which includes subframe drop.

I always do a normal service, change oil, fuel and air filters. Drain your oil and replace it. The oil pump i clean during this service too after oil is drained always good to clean your sump of all fine particles and oil pump too. This just gives ur motor a refresh feel.

SOURCE: bmw n42 oil pump

the m42 oil pump is located inside the timing chain cover and is an integral part of the casing so it is neccessary to remove the water pump + viscous fan etc to expose the pump front cover then remove 4 machine screws to examine the pump rotors underneath.

SOURCE: What part is attached at the back to the power steering pump because it leaks water inbetween there .Its a BMW 318i 2002 E46 N42 Motor. There are no screws that can be removed to fix it.

The water pump is located behind the power steering pump on this engine, they can be quite fiddly.

Tip

Extending your BMW life and improving its performance

General overall cleanliness of your engine is the best preventive maintenance you can perform on your BMW. A clean engine runs cooler and is much less likely to cause premature failure of other parts. It's also easier to work on. Regular routine replacement of all filters, lubricants, coolant and the other parts noted here is critical. Use the mileage guidelines shown as your benchmark. Sensing and mechanical tolerances have become so tight even slight variations can create drastic performance changes. Remember that some improvements may not take effect right away if your BMW's computer is designed to learn and adjust. The computer may need to see various parameters before making any permanent setting changes.
