SOURCE: The gear shift get's stuck

Could be the shifter interlock switch - your car requires that the brake pedal is pressed before it can come out of park. If that switch is not working, the car won't ever know you're pressing the brake, and won't let the car out of park.

it could be the shift linkage might be out or wenged agenst something if the shifter is on the steering colum it will most likley be in there i really cant tell you too much without knowing were the shifter is located if i have the year and stuff i might be able to get you some diograms

THERE IS A SENSOR ON THE BRAKE PEDAL THAT RELEASES THE THE SHIFTER.THERE A 3 COMPONENTS INVOLVED.U CAN PUT IT IN NEUTRAL BEFORE U START THE CAR.THEN WIL SHIFT.

SOURCE: Gear Shift gets stuck on Maxima 2001

The gear shift electrical relay or module inside it is not reading the signal to release. You need to have the electronic relay or module repaired or the gear shift assembly replaced.

SOURCE: The gear shift is stuck in park. The wheel moves

Make sure you have brake lamps. The shift interlock solenoid is powered by the brake lamp switch.

Are your brake lights working?
If not, replace the fuse. Still not working? Replace the brake light switch. (Your brake light switch also releases the lock for the gear shift).
If your brake lights are working, are you hearing a soft "click" at the gear shift when you depress the brake? If not, check the lock solenoid at the gear shift lever.
There is also a slight possibility that your park pin is jammed. If you're parked on a hill, it's likely. Have someone push the car back and forth as you try to take it out of park... JUST DON'T RUN THEM OVER. :)

I have a 2002 excursion, The gear selector goes into park, but the vehicle continues to roll. It will also only start in neutral.

Its gear shift issues.

The shifter needs to be inspected. The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities. But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this occurred then its shifter assembly alignment issue.

Shifting when driving

The shifter needs to be inspected.If the gears are shifted automatically.The shifter assembly is got misaligned,it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities.But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this auto shifting occurred then its shifter assembly realign issue.
