Never tow in over drive, Never tow with the accelerator more than Half way to the floor, when shifting Keep the RPMS between 2000-3000 and Drive slow in the next lower gear than what the car selects.

I agree - Never tow in overdrive it probably defaults to overdrive when in drive. The Bmw x5 probably defaults to overdrive when in is in D . My car not a BMW but it defaults to over drive in D. I have to put in in 3 gear on the auto if I am towing otherwise I am straining the engine it is the gear ratio of over drive that causes the engine to work more with no power .

THe engine will rev higher in gear 3 but through the gearing it will be working less .

Look at is this way; Torque is power!

However, twice the torque in 1st gear (Using the largest least breakable parts) but, half the hp (More HP is more torque done in less time). When in a lower gear the Engine has more Torque but, less HP or needs more time to do the work.
    Bottom line:
So, you have to drive slower to maintain cooling (Watch engine temperature), and low operating range RPM of about (Watch for) 2-3k RPM max!
With all this the engine oil should not be foaming on the stick, dip stick should NOT be so hot as you can't touch the entire length and if it is don't tow.

Also, looking at overdrive, the vehicle is in the lightest load possible/most fuel efficient mode, as in the least power usage capability and the smallest most breakable/wearable parts are engaged to do this.

You are very lucky you have "limp home mode"!
Most other very expensive toys don't, they just destroy themselves, by them selves :(

SOURCE: towing capacity

There are two different hitches available for your vehicle A class I hitch, which is rated to tow up to 2,000 lbs, and a class II hitch which is rated to tow up to 3,500 lbs. Now this is based on the frame. To find out how much you can really tow, you'll have to go to your owners manual.

97 Grand Prix SE Sedan

Class I - #24659 - Installation Instructions
Class II - #36232 - Installation Instructions

97 Grand Prix GT, Coupe & Sedan Inc. GTP Package

Class I - #24660 - Installation Instructions
Class II - #36241 - Installation Instructions

These hitches I've listed are made by Draw-Tite, and you can view them here.

Hope this helps!

Tow haul mode has no change on transmission operation. Truck barely moves a 6000lb trailer when starting off on a hill. 3/4 ton with a 6.0 and 3.73 rear end.

tow mode gives ur transmission a longer shift point to relive strain on engine while driving -it doesnt give it more horse power to start off a hill

Brake controller not communicating w/ 7 pin connector

what type controller did you install? Is this a camper or trailer? Is the controller hydraulic plumbed into master cylyder? Important to know how to adjust rheostat for sensitivity. If set at minimum the system is basically on the edge of not sending any signal to towed unit. The intructions should explain how to make this adjustment. If set too sensitive trailer brakes will lock up before the tow vehcle starts to brake. Controller should be set so trailer starts braking just befor the tow vehcle. If not the trailer will tax the tow vehicle brakes by pushing. Its set right when you feel the combination stretching out. trailer first then tow vehcle. Good luck and remember, if truck brakes first and too hard you risk a jacknife. All light voltages should be system voltage. Brake voltage is variable depending on setting on controller. Understand your breakaway brakes and how they work. breakaway breaks require an auxillary battery. Again, good luck and you know where to find me if I can be of anymore help.
