If the ABS light is on you have codes. You need to communicate with the ABS control module. You need factory level scan tool to find out where the problem may be

True, but to go further ... there is more than one computer in most any vehicle on the road today. A general check for codes will read the engine control codes. These are not the same as, or in the same place, as ABS codes. Another common onboard is the body control module; which would have yet another set of codes and its own procedure for reading them. Accessing these other code sets often requires a more advanced scanner, or a different procedure, though not always dealership(I don't know specifically for Subaru). Paul's is right, if the light is on there are code(s) present. I just wanted to explain it further. Lacking ability to read them, give it a good visual inspection ... wheel speed sensors, wiring, fluid leaks/levels, etc. You might get lucky.
