Some BMW have a mechanical pump driven by the serpentine belt, and some have an totally electric powered pump.

Just buy one for the model you have.

1991 bmw 318is 4 door 16 valve motor, runs hot and radiator cold

you may have bad waterpump,the impeller on pump may be borken, just because it doesnt leak doesnt mean its good.also could have exhaust entering cooling system (bad headgasket) if pump is good have a block test done.

Removal of water pump

Removing alternator drive belt, refer to Engine.
Release the belt pulley from the water pump.

Drain coolant.
Release water pump.

Insert two M6 screws in water-pump thread and press out water pump evenly from gear case.

Installation:
Replace sealing ring.

Overheating

you might have a blown head casket try due a pressure test on each cylinder and sometimes you can take a spark plug out 1 by 1 and just tap the ket so it cranks and see if water comes out of the cylinder
