Has the 'Check Engine' light come on? I had this problem at 30,000 miles and the trouble codes set were transmission component slipping. Ultimately required replacement of the transmission.

SOURCE: 1997 Chevy Astro Van accelerates without pushing on gas peddal

You are right to be concerned about this behavior since it can definitely increase your stopping distance.
Either your cable has eaten its way into the inner tubing and is hanging up, or the mechanics at the throttlebody needs some lubrication.
With no engine running, have someone inside to press on the accelerator while you watch for movement of the linkage under the hood. Once you have located it, operate it by hand to see how it feels. If the linkage does not return to the stops provided, then use a heavy-duty penetrating oil to soak the moving parts. If it still hangs, then the cable needs replacement.
With the engine running, tranny in Park and the parking brake on, after you have lubed the visible linkage, have some one inside press on the gas and watch the linkage to see if it now returns to the mechanical stop. Carefully move it by hand to see if it is truly at the limits of its travel where it should be at an idle.

The control module is located just behind the ignition coil. Sorta hard to get to but we got it and the van is running great.

SOURCE: 1997 chevy astro no reverse but drives

The band on the 4L60 E applies in 2nd & 4th (not reverse). The sun shell is the most common failure when you loose reverse in the 4L60E but you will also loose 2nd & 4th. It is possible that the rev clutch is also distressed. May also have some valve body issues

Need 1997 service manual for chevy astro van

If your looking to buy you can try amazon, ebay, or rock auto as well. Those are aftermarket vendors who are more than likely to have either Chilton or Haynes manuals. Other wise if you know a buddy at a shop or someone who has access to Michelle on demand or All Data, those will more than likely have what you need.
Hope this Helps.

run your hand across the tire tread itself and check to see if the tread is feathered or cupped. this will cause road noise. Also could be a wheel bearing worn.
