Yes, it is possible. The vehicle ECU, (it's brain), isn't getting the proper signal from one of the cam shaft actuators. This is a switch that alters how early or late the valves open as the engine speed changes. A good auto electrician will be able to check the wiring.
If the actuator itself needs replacing it will depend on which engine is fitted as to how difficult it will be to replace. The four cylinder engines, (1.8 litre), are reasonably easy to do as they are both right at the front of the engine. The V6 engines can be a little bit more tricky as you will have 4 to deal with.

It makes no change because that is the cylinder you have a fault in, most likely cause is bad ignition coil. Swap the coil to another cylinder and see if the problem follows the bad coil.
