I want to paint my 2001 dodge ram 1500 gunmetal grey with a matte finish

the blower resistor is the most likely reason.. for that truck you may also find that its melted and will require the pigtail for the resistor as well

the thermostat is located where the upper radator hose comes off the engine there are two bolts or nuts remove hose and remove housing you will see the thermostat when you do clean old gasket material off block and reverse removal procedure

disconnect the positive battery cable for 2 minutes and that will reset the computer

SOURCE: Remove headlight assembly from a 2001 Dodge Ram

On the upper grill side of the headlight assy. there
should be 1 or 2 push pins that hold the seal on the
headlight assy to the front of the fender. Also check
for a guide/push pin on the inner top of the assy on
the outer fender side. That should be all there is to
hold the headlight in place. Hope this helps.
