Disconnect battery ground cable
Remove the ground wire (black) from the alternator
Disconnect the positive wire (red wire held on by a retaining nut) from the back of the alternator
Now disconnect the wire harness from the alternator
Remove the drive belt
NOTE: Some models use a belt tensioner that applies tension to the drive belt.
The best tool to use for this job is the serpentine belt too.
If you can borrow one from a neighbour you can get one at PartSource. (Part# 648451)
On other models you will have to loosen the adjusting bolt on the alternator bracket.

Take off the mounting bolts from the alternator bracket
Now remove the alternator from the engine compartment

Installing Your New Alternator
Put the alternator in the engine compartment
Install the mounting bolts that connect the alternator to the alternator bracket
Connect the alternator wiring harness
Now connect the positive wire to the alternator
NOTE: Your new alternator should come with a retaining nut.
Remember to remove the nut before you install the positive wire.

It all depends on the model and year. The alternator is on your main belt. It has two electrical connectors and probably a bolt or two for placement.

Timing belts are typically only used on overhead camshaft engines. Timing belts are used to synchronize the crankshaft with the camshaft, similar to a timing chain on an overhead valve (pushrod) engine. Unlike a timing belt, a timing chain will normally last the life of the engine without needing service or replacement. Timing belts use raised teeth to mesh with sprockets to operate the valvetrain of an overhead camshaft engine.

Whenever a vehicle with an unknown service history comes into your repair facility or is recently purchased, here are some points that should be asked to help prevent costly engine damage:

* Does the owner know if, or when the belt was replaced-
* If the vehicle purchased is used, or the condition and mileage of the last timing belt replacement are unknown, it is recommended to inspect, replace or at least inform the owner that the vehicle is equipped with a timing belt.
* Note the mileage of the vehicle. The average replacement interval for a timing belt is approximately 60,000 miles (96,000 km).


Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation

1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the engine splash shield.
3. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to release the drive belt tension.
4. Remove the drive belt from the alternator.
5. Slowly release the drive belt tensioner.
6. Remove the drive belt from the accessory drive pulleys.

To install:

1. Install the drive belt to the accessory drive pulley.
2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise.
3. Install the drive belt to the alternator.
4. Ensure the drive belt is properly aligned and seated into the grooves of the accessory drive pulleys.
5. Slowly release the drive belt tensioner
6. Install the engine splash shield.
7. Lower the vehicle.

You 98 Corolla has a timing chain that it internal and need no normal maintenance. It uses a hydraulic/spring tensioner to keep things tight and as long as its quiet, everything is fine.
Your drive belt (not to be confused with a t. belt) is the external belt you see on the passenger side of the engine. It drives you alt, water pump, A/C and power steering. It uses a spring loaded tensioner to keep the belt tight. These can weaken over time and cause a rattle noise and belt slippage.

3. Remove radiator upper fan shroud from radiator.
4. Move drive belt tensioner to loose side using wrench
then remove drive belt.

5. Remove cooling fan assembly four nuts, then the

10.Remove crankshaft pulley assembly using
5–8840–0133–0 crankshaft holder, hold crankshaft
pulley remove center bolt, then the pulley.
11. Remove right side timing belt cover then left side
timing belt cover.
12. Remove lower timing belt cover
13. Remove pusher.
CAUTION: The pusher prevents air from entering
the oil chamber. Its rod must always be facing
upward.

14. Remove timing belt.
CAUTION:
1. Do not bend or twist the belt, otherwise its core
could be damaged. The belt should not be bent at
a radius less than 30 mm.
2. Do not allow oil or other chemical substances to
come in contact with the belt. They will shorten
the life.
3. Do not attempt to pry or stretch the belt with a
screw driver or any other tool during installation.
4. Store timing belt in a cool and dark place. Never
expose the belt direct sunlight or heat.

2. Align the alignment mark on the RH bank
camshaft drive gear pulley (2) to the alignment
mark of the cylinder head cover RH (3).
3. Align the alignment mark (white line) on the timing
belt (1) with alignment mark on the RH bank
camshaft drive gear pulley (2) (on the left side as
viewed from the front of the vehicle) and put the
timing belt on the camshaft drive gear pulley.
Secure the belt with a double clip or equivalent
clip.

4. Align the alignment mark on the LH bank
camshaft drive gear pulley (2) to the alignment
mark of the cylinder head cover LH (3).
5. Align the alignment mark (white line) on the timing
belt (1) with the alignment mark on the LH bank
camshaft drive gear pulley (2).
When aligning the timing marks, use a wrench to
turn the camshaft drive gear pulley, then set the
timing mark between timing belt and camshaft
drive gear pulley and put the timing belt on the
camshaft drive gear pulley.
Secure the belt with a double clip or equivalent
clip.
NOTE: It is recommended for easy installation that the
belt be secured with a double clip or equivalent clip after
it is installed the timing belt to each pulley.

6. Install crankshaft pulley temporarily and tighten
center bolt by hand (do not use a wrench).
Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise to give some
belt slack between the crankshaft timing pulley
and the RH bank camshaft drive gear pulley.
2. Install pusher and tighten bolt to the specified torque.
Torque : 25 N·m (2.5 Kg·m/18 lb ft)
1. Install the pusher while pushing the tension pulley
to the belt.
2. Pull out pin from the pusher.
NOTE: When reusing the pusher, press the pusher with
approximately 100Kg to retract the rod, and insert a pin
(1.4 mm piano wire).

Step1 Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the intake air temperature wiring, the breather hose and intake air hose. Take off the air cleaner assembly. Step2 Remove the right wheel. Remove the accessory belts. Remove the crankshaft bolt and the crankshaft pulley. Remove the power steering bolts and the timing belt covers. Temporarily install the crankshaft bolt and turn the engine clockwise until the mark on the crankshaft pulley, which is a triangle stamped into the crank sprocket, is aligned with the corresponding triangular mark on the block. Step3 Make sure that the timing marks are aligned on the camshaft sprockets. These are a line on each sprocket that runs through a tooth on each sprocket. These lines should line up in the middle between each sprocket and point toward each other. If they do not line up, turn the crankshaft one more time and they will line up. It takes two turns of the crank to one complete revolution of the cam. Step4 Loosen the water pump bolts; using the 3/8-inch ratchet, turn the water pump clockwise away from the belt and loosely tighten the bolts to keep it there. Remove the timing belt. Make sure the timing marks are aligned and install the new belt starting on the right side from the crank sprocket and working counterclockwise. Keep all the belt tension on the right side away from the tensioner. Step5 Loosen the bolts in the water pump and rotate the water pump counterclockwise to apply tension to the belt. Watch the tensioner, which is above the water pump, and apply tension with the water pump until the pointer on the tensioner lines up with the notch above it. Lightly tighten the water-pump bolts. Step6 Turn the engine two more times and align the timing marks perfectly. Loosen the water-pump bolts and, using the ratchet, apply tension to the belt until the tensioner pointers are aligned. Tighten the water-pump bolts. Step7 Install the timing-belt covers and the bolts in the power-steering pump and tighten. Remove the crankshaft bolt and install the crank pulley and the bolt, then torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 70 foot pounds of torque. Install all components in reverse order of removal.
