SOURCE: removal of a 93 pontiac sunbird LE transmission
You can remove it WITHOUT REMOVING THE MOTOR. It's not that hard, I was able to put in a new clutch system within 8 hours. Here is pretty much what you have to do:
When looking at the engine after lifting the hood, you need to put a jack under the motor and if you have it, either another jack under the trans or what works MUCH easier is an Engine hoist.
Disassemble the motor mount on the right side of the engine compartment (When looking at it from the front of the car. Remove the tire, remove the brake pad and disc rotor from the assembly and pull the nut that is holding the drive shaft in place. You can then just tap it with a hammer until you release the shaft from the hub assembly. (You know that hunk of steel or metal that your wheel studs stick out from.) You can then undo the bolts around the transmission, then use the jack to lower the motor until the trans just clears the wheel well.
You slide it out with either the jack or use the engine hoist ( I WOULD PREFER TO USE THE SECOND JACK TO SLIDE THE TRANNY RIGHT OUT OF THE WHEEL WELL)
Then use the Hoist when trying to line it back up. Put everything back the way you removed it and there we go.

I HAVE A NINETY ONE THAT I REPLACED THE CLUTCH IN SO THAT WOULD BE THE EASIEST WAY TO MY KNOWLEDGE.
