Modern vehicles are equipped with sophisticated HVAC systems that use a series of sensors that work together to activate and regulate the AC system. One of the primary sensors that plays a key role in the operation of the AC system is the outside ambient temperature sensor which measures the external temperature of the vehicle as a reference point for the computer to make calculations.
When it fails, there will usually be several symptoms:
1. The Auto AC Mode will not work
Most modern vehicles have an auto AC setting that will allow the vehicle to automatically set and regulate the temperature. The AC system will simply read the ambient and cabin temperature sensors data and continuously cycle the AC system on and off as required to keep the cabin cool. When the ambient temperature sensor fails, the system does not have a reference point from which to base it's automatic calculations and the setting will not work.
2. Inconsistent Cooling
If the ambient temperature sensor fails or is sending out an inconsistent signal, then the AC system may have trouble maintaining cool and comfortable cabin temperatures.
3. Incorrect Temperature Readings .. which is what you have mentioned
The most obvious symptom of a bad or failing sensor is an incorrect reading on the vehicle's temperature gauge.
So in your case, if the reading is high AND other problems have surfaced ... like the Auto AC Mode not working correctly ... or Inconsistent Cooling ... then the sensor should be replaced
Take it back to your Audi dealer pronto for a quick and thorough assessment.
SOURCE: Outside temperature
The exterior temperature display is built into the Automatic temperature control unit. or the A/C controls. Look at the buttons for the A/C unit and press the one that is marked "EXT". This will display the outside temperature.

sounds like a faulty outside temp sensor. This is located behind the lower front grill on the rad support. This sensor is likely causing your both issues as the voltage drop or resistance is not in the range the ecu expects. You can check http://forums.fourtitude.com/zeromain they will help to clairfy swapping the sesnor if you feel like getting your hands dirty.
SOURCE: Audi Flashing gear display
The vehicle would seem to lose power as the transmission has gone into 'safe mode' and the transmission control module has detected a fault in the transmission hence the flashing gear display. you need to get someone in a dealer or someone that has the technology to plug into the car and find out what the problem in the trans is. hope this helps.

I would suspect that the connection to the outside temperature sensor is not good or the sensor itself is bad. Check the connection and clean and reattach as necessary. Otherwise replace the sensor. I think they're pretty reasonably priced.
The outside air temperature sensor for a 2000 Windstar is located under the front bumber on the passengers side. It is clearly visible if you lay down and look through the lower two air openings in the plastic bumper. It is the only electrical device in that area and it is made of black plastic.
