Jaguar S-type goes totally dead, no lights, horn, nothing, but comes back to life in seconds or days later. A key relay maybe?

  • George Christ Jan 07, 2019

Bummer mystery. Battery post or cable being dirty may be the cause. The fix is to remove and clean post and cables. Take the smaller black "ground" cable off first, and install it on last.- Got That? Part stores sell a tool just to clean these parts [cost $5]. If battery is dirty, wash with dish soapy water. rinse off with water. Sprinkle baking soda on connectors, then remove and clean them. Follow ground cable and tighten its connection to the motor and frame. A good time for tune up additives to be installed. Hope this helps. Probably not a relay as some circuits will be hard-wired into the battery circuit.

I once encountered a car behaving just like yours and a very disenchanted owner. Over a period of a couple of months it had been attended by a couple of breakdown services and had been several times to various repairers.

The fault turned out to be a bad connection where the battery terminal had been crimped to the battery cable. It appeared normal but inside, when I cut it open, the wire strands were black and scorched resulting effectively in a random disconnection of the battery. When the car had started it behaved normally but getting it started was another matter entirely.

SOURCE: Horn malfunction

Under the hood of your jeep on the passenger side there is the Power Distrubution Center (PDC). Remove the lid and thered will be fuses and relays in there. I could not locate the exact location of the horn reley, but if you start removing them one by one you can find the horn relay. You will know the right one when the horn stops.

SOURCE: 2003 S TYPE JAGUAR. DON'T DRIVE OFTEN BATTERY

You must charge the battery or you can use jumper cables from another battery to your battery to activate the electric trunk release, just be sure you hook up the jumper cables correctly ( cable to + on the battery and black to _ terminal of battery)and wear safety glasses when hooking up cables this should release the trunk. Also as a precaution always hook up + or red jumper cables wires first to prevent a arcing spark which is not terribly dangerous but this order in which to connect jumper cables is recommended.

SOURCE: 2001 Cadillac Deville problems starting

I have had the same problem and I have come to the conclusion it is the security system. After 3 minutes the car will start so there is nothing wrong with the battery or starter. I have had it to the dealer a few times and they cannot solve it. It may be the locks on the doors and they may not be resetting properly. I have learned to live with it.

SOURCE: My 2000 Jaguar S-Type High Engine Temperature

I assume the car drives okay the rest of the time at varying speeds and conditions?
It may be you have an air lock in the system (have you had work done or lost coolant?) or the sensor or its wiring is faulty.
Check the level of your coolant tank when the car is at full temp and idling - for safety - the tank is opaque you should be able to see the water level - do not open when hot !

Horns not working,original relay 43yrs old !

You hear clicking at horns, and not the relay? Maybe the horns went bad, or maybe you need to check and clean the connections there.
Don\'t know why the cab light went dim, unless the horn wire was trying to make contact?
Yes, TJ, the horn wire should be hot. You are grounding that hot wire when you press for the horn. That hot wire comes from the coil side of the horn relay. Press for horn, it grounds the coil side of relay, and the relay can pass power to the horns.
Now back to the clicking no-honker horns: power gets to the horns when relay is energized, and there has to be a good ground for horns to work. I don\'t know if your horns are case grounded or a wire from horns goes to ground, but check the ground there. If case grounded, pull horns off and clean the ground. Also might try a known good horn. Keep at it, sounds like you are almost there.

Jaguar x type battery dead

What year and engine size is this 2008 jaguar x type?

Are you sure the battery is good, did you have it tested, next if battery is good and you can see bright headlights when you turn them on then i would look at the fuses, if you jump started it you may have blown a fuse.

when you say no ignition what do you mean? are the dash lights coming on when you turn the key?

Is the problem that you have no knd of power to car or every thing lights up but nothing happens when you try to crank engine, or does engine crank (SPIN OVER) but not start up ?

let me know the answers to these questions and i will help you. good day

Hi! My friend has got a Jaguar xj6 1997 with a 3.2Litre engine and automatic transmission. It doesnt start. Went to work, worked just fine. Dead later on the same day. Battery ok. Tried jerking the...

i assume your car is@1997 a model/year x300 a common cause of the symptom you have is a corroded/open circuit wiring at a connector or around under the washer bottle filler white connector i think its the ok to start signal from the security/locking module located below trunk fuse box the module can also go faulty. one easy test is to switch ign on if the check engine light goes off with other warning lights. start there fault finding with the wiring etc

New starter, new relay and new battery...problem is...when I shut off engine and 30 minutes later went out to start again the key turned and nothing happened...it was like the battery was completely dead....

I suspect you have a loose or corroded connection. you should be able to check voltage at relay and if good, jump across from cable coming from battery to terminal from ignition switch. or u can bypass the relay completely by using a jumper cable to go from battery pos to output cable on relay that goes to starter.

One possibility is that the battery terminals are either corroded or not tight to the battery posts. Second, the battery itself may have seen its days. Try another battery of simply replace it. If the problem still exists, the have a mechanic inspect the main wiring from the battery to fuse block. Your alarm device may have its own battery source. The tick tick are the cars systems relays trying to engage, but there is not enough power for them to engage.
