You need to remove the cover from the rear carrier/ meatball its full of oil so have a pan to catch it loosen the filler plug first.once the cover it off you will see 4 small gears spider gears remove the pin it will have a small bolt holding it then the gears will come out then push the axle in from the out side. Then you will see a clip like a horse shoe shape it slides into a grove in the axle shaft pull it out then the slide the axle out .Its not as hand as it may sound if your set up with simple tools its like an hours work

Remove the brake caliper
Remove the disc, (rotor)
Remove the 34mm nut on the axel shaft
Remove the three (3) bolts from the back side
You will need a wheel puller (three jaw will work well)
Place the puller over the hub and tighten, this will push the shaft out of the hub. Now you have to pull the hub assy. out of the mounting bracket. I found hitting each side,of the hub with a lead hammer to work well. Don't forget to disconnect the ABS senser on the back side of the hub assy.
Do not over tighten the 34mm axel nut when you install the new assy. If you use an impact whrench on it you will damage the bearing.

Well, you will have to wiggle and pry the rotor until it comes off. I just did this on a 2003 mountaineer and it was a bear. At least one side was very hard. It turned out the rotor inside was so bad that the shoes could not get past a lip on the outer edge of the parking brake effective surface. I had to pry and hit until it came off. Once removed I noticed that the shoes were shot, I mean, the braking material was completely gone. This is where the fun began. Removed the springs and removed the hold down clips. The hold down clips were stretched and were not effective by the way. Removing the shoes was not too bad. Installing the new ones is difficult as the wheel hub is in the way. Carefully install the springs and adjuster. Once you get past that then you have to deal with the hold down clips. It happens that the top pin where the clips attaches to is fairly accessible from behind so you can support it while you install the hold down clip. Again, it is doable but very difficult as the hub is in the way and the room is barely enough. Once you do the upper, the bottom one is the bear, the hole to access the pin from behind happens to be underneath the CV joint and it is not easily visible. I had the worst time installing this clip. If you do not then the shoes will rub against the rotor. Not good. Anyways, it is not easy, I do not know what they were thinking with this system. Removing the nut in the center will only allow you to remove the cv joint, you will have to deal with the wheel bearing if you want to remove the hub. Good luck, and I hope this helped.

if it is a solid bearing do it up as tight as you can.if it is a tapered bearing do it up untill the nut is touching the bearing check the hub for play if you have got play do the nut up a bit more until the play is gone in the hub.make sure you do not over tighten the bearing or the wheel will not turn freely.the wheel needs to spin with no drag.

yes it is one big nut, however it looks like 4 individual nuts due to the fact that they are a thinly stacked layer or thin nuts held together by what you called the tab washer............only way to replace is to get a new one from ford........

Grinding metal sound over 30 mph

I believe that your Subaru has a transmission issue. There are quite a few things that will make a grinding noise. Wheel bearings, worn out brakes, damaged brake rotors or drums, loose or damaged brake calipers, defective hardware kit (for the brake shoes), torque converter, flywheel, U-joints, and CV joints. The interesting part of your symptoms is that you can only hear the grinding between 30-60MPH. I think you need to continue testing and inspecting components, one by one. You have all ready narrowed your search down. You know that the Brakes, CV joints, and Bearings are fine. So now you need to focus on the drive train. Inspect as much as you can from the flywheel, to the transmission, the drive shaft and rear axel, and the output shaft and front drive axel. If you can not find it yourself it may be time to send it in for repair. Let me know if you have any questions or new information, good luck.

Procedure for replacing rear whl brgs on a 2003 escape awd

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Rear wheel
    • Rear brake shoes
    • Rear halfshaft nut and loosen the halfshaft from the hub
    • Wheel hub and place it in a vise
    • Inner wheel bearing race from the hub
    • Antilock Brake System (ABS) sensor bracket and move the sensor aside, if equipped
    • Parking brake cable from the steering knuckle
    • Brake line from the wheel cylinder and support the knuckle
    • Lower shock absorber nut
    • Lower ball joint by holding the ball joint stud
    • Upper ball joint
    • Coil spring while noting the location of the insulator
    • Steering knuckle cam
    • Steering knuckle
    • Snapring and press out the outer wheel bearing race from the knuckle

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    • New wheel bearing into the steering knuckle
    • Snapring to the knuckle
    • Wheel hub
    • Steering knuckle cam and hand tighten the bolt
    • Coil spring
    • Shock absorber lower nut. Torque the nut to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) for 2002-04 models; 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
    • Upper ball joint. Torque the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
    • Lower ball joint. Torque the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm). Align the steering knuckle cam and torque the bolt to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
    • Brake line to the wheel cylinder. Torque the brake line bracket bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and the brake line fastener to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    • Parking brake cable to the backing plate. Torque the bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    • ABS sensor bracket. Torque the bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm), if equipped
    • Halfshaft nut. Torque the nut to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).
    • Brake shoes
    • Rear wheel
    • Negative battery cable
  2. Fill and bleed the brake system.
  3. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as needed.

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Rear wheel
    • Rear brake drum
    • Wheel hub nut
    • Wheel hub
    • Inner wheel bearing race from the hub
    • Snapring
    • Wheel bearing outer race from the knuckle

How do u replace a front wheel bearing on a 2005 gmc envoy 4x4 and dose anybody have diagrams to follow how to

Remove center hub cap. Remove large nut behind hub cap.Lift wheel assembly off ground. Remove wheel. Remove brake calipher assembly by taking out larger bolts from back of calipher. Remove brake rotor. Pull axle toward middle of vehicle, you may have to tap axle end with small hammer being careful not to damage threads on end of axle. Remove three bolts from back, bearing housing should come out to the front.

Rear wheel bearing

if its like the 99 winstar:

safely support the van, remove rear wheel, remove brake drum, remove grease cap. remove caged locknut assembly (38mm socket i think.) then pull the hub assembly from the axel. you may need to cut away the inner race if the bearing falls apart. clean axel, apply alittle anti size compound, then push on the new hub assembly. tighten down the hub nut to specifications (should be on the leaflet in the new bearing package), install dust cap, install drum, install wheel, lower and drive :)

Leaking rear axel seal

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel Brake caliper and rotor, if equipped Brake drum, if equipped Axle retainer nuts Axle shaft, seal and bearing assembly
  2. Split the bearing retainer with a chisel and remove the retainer ring.
  3. Press the bearing off the axle shaft.
  4. Remove the axle seal and retaining plate.

Remove rear axel

you don't have to remove the whole axle just the hub assembly this is held on by 4 bolts. remove wheel. then remove drum/ or rotor remove all the brake hardware. remove outer dust cap to bearings remove center nut and remove outter bearing. remove the hub this will give you plenty of room to remove the broken bolt. please rate this
