Reverse seems to be sticking

I have a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. Lately when I put it in reverse it jumps and then goes but there is hesitation. Sometimes it goes slowly and feels like I may not be able to back up.

Not a good sign. Check your transmission fluid. Make sure that vehicle is running at the same time. thats how you check transmission fluid. if its low, add fluid, check and make sure which kind to add so you dont add wrong kind. if that dont work, then your gonna have to probably end up buying another transmission or having that one rebuilt. feel free to write back

Why does my transmission on my 2005 Mercury Mountaineer jump when I put it in reverse?

Auto transmission diagnosis is a fairly specialised part of mechanicking so I suggest you ask a specialist.

Low oil level or pressure or sticking servo or actuator or excessively worn clutch spring to mind as possibilities.

2005 Mountaineer 2 wheel drive, 6 cyl hard to shift when parked on incline or decline and doesnt feel like shifting into overdrive. Sometimes jump a few inches when put into reverse. Any thoughts.

Yes when you park on an incline you should always put your emergency brake on before shifting to park. Then whenyou are ready to move again put you car in gear before disengaging the emergency brake. this will remove the stress from the transmission.

My 2002 mercury mountaineer have no problem going forward but it seen like when i put it in reverse the back wheel lock and it out out a funny smell

It sounds like you have a loose brake shoe inside one of your rear axle brake drums. You will have to remove the rear wheels and brake drums to find out for sure.

2005 mountaineer will not go into any gear

Check transmission fluid. If full then sounds like electrical or internal transmission problem. Any check engine lights on? If so get codes pulled from vehicle computer.

I have put a ford refurbished tranny in and rebuilt the shifter assembly twice - 2004 mountaineer. Why am I still getting hesitation going into gear? intermittant problem, most going from park to reverse.

The transmission many to relearn shift points which can take several miles of driving is some cases. drive the car for a while, the hesitation in shifting continues have your dealer flash the ecu
